It was great to be at Keyston Village Hall this evening to address their Annual Parish Assembly.

As you can see, we are so far west we’ve hit stone buildings!

I look forward to serving this beautiful Huntingdonshire village for as long as HDC remains a Council.

Last night we held the first meeting of the new Huntingdonshire District Council since the elections earlier this month.

Following this, the Council is now run by a minority LibDem administration, propped up by 4 (not very!) Independents and 2 Greens.

Against expectations, I’m pleased to have been elected as Vice-Chair of the Corporate Governance Committee, which ensures the Council manages public money effectively and with integrity.

Due to the close outcome of the elections, a number of votes were tied, requiring the new Chair (Cllr Ferguson, Green) to use his deciding ‘casting vote’ on multiple occasions.

When we reached the last vote, with all his previous casting votes having being for the minority administration, I took the opportunity to point out that 25-25 votes should not always lead to the Lib Dems getting their way!

To his great credit, he reflected on this challenge and the final position - appropriately, a Panel that scrutinises the minority administration - was filled by the very experienced Conservative, Tim Alban

I look forward to working with all Councillors - whatever their allegiance.

Planning Application - 190 Homes East of Stow Road, Kimbolton

As you may have seen from other Facebook posts, there is a meeting of Kimbolton & Stonely Parish Council next Tuesday 19th May at 7pm in the Mandeville Hall. The PC will hear views from residents, consider the application and make a recommendation to Huntingdonshire District Council.

HDC Planning Officers are also currently considering the application, and I urge people who wish to make their comments know to either write in or respond online.

The process from here is that if KSPC and HDC reach different conclusions, the matter is referred to a committee of HDC Councillors (the Development Management Committee). This is a public meeting, held in Huntingdon (and also screened online).

If they decide to refuse the application, then the applicant has the right of appeal to a Planning Inspector, whose decision is final. If the Committee approves the application, there is no right of appeal for objectors (and the only avenue of challenge would be around due process not having been followed).

I am VERY CONCERNED at the size, scale and location of this application and the dramatic impact it will have on our community. I recently took Ben Obese-Jecty MP to view the site and to outline those concerns, which I know are shared by many other residents. He has promised to provide whatever support and advice he can, and was particularly concerned by the cumulative effect of the number of applications in and around Kimbolton over the past few months.

Please do make your views know, and if you are attending the meeting next Tuesday I look forward to seeing you there.

I’m aware that food waste bins were not collected in Croxton Gardens, Catworth this week - and that this has now occurred several times in succession.

I’ve been in touch with Council officers and I’m told the missed bins will be emptied shortly and the crews will be alerted for future collections.

I was delighted to join Ben Obese-Jecty MP at the opening of the new Kimbolton play park yesterday. It was a beautiful morning, both in terms of the weather and seeing the excitement of the children using the new equipment!

A large proportion of the funding came from HDC’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), effectively a tax on housing development to pay for improvements to local services.

I think it’s vital that more of this CIL is spent in our rural communities, not simply on trophy projects in our towns - and I will continue to make this point in Huntingdon!

A special shout out to Harriett Bradley for her determination in making this project happen, the Parish Council for their sponsorship, and the many local people and businesses who have provided support and materials.

This is a great model for other communities and Kimbolton can be rightly proud of celebrating a fantastic community asset in great style!

Today is local election day!

Your polling station is open between 7am and 10pm (don’t forget to bring some ID with you)

I’ve gone to every corner of the Kimbolton Ward over the past few weeks outlining my priorities if re-elected:

✅ Continue to fight speculative housing developments
✅ Getting the LibDem County Council to sort out the state of local roads
✅ Reverse the green bin tax
✅ Speak up for rural communities

I’d love your support today.

A number of residents have complained about the unauthorised ‘lorry park’ on Old Thrapston Road between Catworth and Brington.

The District Council moved to take enforcement action to close it down last year. The occupier appealed against this decision, which meant nothing further could be done.

I’m pleased to report that the Planning Inspector has now dismissed the appeal. The occupant now has 6 months to vacate the site.

To be clear: I have no objection to people wanting to set up a business and earn a livelihood. But the planning rules are there for a purpose: they protect both communities and developers, and should be followed.

District Council Elections - Thursday 7th May

Nominations have now closed, and I’m delighted to be standing again for election for Kimbolton and surrounding villages.

Below are the candidates for the Kimbolton Ward.

I’m currently out and about across the 12 villages in the Ward, delivering a leaflet from Ben Obese-Jecty MP and me.

It’s hard to believe it’s now 22 years since I was first elected! It would be a privilege to continue to use my experience to serving you.

There’s a Special HDC meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) night to consider recommending that the Government delays this May’s Local Elections in our District.

I will NOT be voting to cancel elections.

One of the great tests of a democracy is your right to return or remove councillors.

As the HDC officials have confirmed in their report, there is no excuse to delay - other than being afraid of the electorate!
