HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026 🎆🎉 🍷

Good evening everyone. On behalf of all the councillors and staff of Waverley Borough Council and Godalming Town Council - HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🎉

🌟 2025 has been an extremely busy year for everyone and 2026 is going to be even more so with the last full year of the existence of Waverley Borough itself and the elections for the new West Surrey Unitary in May.

🙏 Thank you to all the residents I have worked with on so many things over this year, to our blue light services in Guildford and Waverley for all you do all year round, and to all our fantastic staff at WBC and GTC and to all those who work for community, charity and voluntary organisations - you all do so much to help and support our communities than most people will ever know or see.

🎆 A happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to you and your families and best wishes for 2026!

Leader, Waverley Borough Council and Godalming Town Council

A dark day for democracy in Surrey

A dark day for democracy in Surrey

Today is 1st May 2025. Today should have been polling day in the Surrey County Council elections.

Today should have been your opportunity to make your voice heard at the ballot box, about everything from highways to Children’s Services and SEN.

That voice has been silenced by the Conservatives who run Surrey Council, who chose to seek local government reorganisation - they were not forced to. They chose this just six months from the end of their four-year terms and, in doing so, not only took away your right to hold them to account, but put all local district and borough councils in Surrey at risk of being exposed to serious debts and the end of discretionary services, which help thousands of vulnerable people across the county.

Not only this, but they now seek, as part of the process, just two massive unitary councils that will run all services. This process, something that normally takes years, is being dangerously and recklessly rushed through and risks exposing even more residents to difficulties, as services decline.

Liberal Democrats right across the county have been fighting this, and trying to achieve the best local outcomes for residents out of the negative situation the Conservatives have brought upon our county. Not only have Conservatives been responsible for starting this reorganisation process, the serious debt issues plaguing the county were all established under the now former Conservative boroughs of Woking, Spelthorne and, of course, Surrey County Council itself.

Liberal Democrats have said, from day one, that we believe any discussion about local government reorganisation should have been part of this county election process so that you, as residents, had at least some say. The County Council continues to offer you no meaningful input into the process.

On top of their anti-democratic behaviour at this level, Conservatives are also seeking to undermine our elected town and parish councils, as they pursue replacing them with unelected community boards and other experimental arrangements. These would take even more of the services, and the voice residents enjoy locally, away. We continue to oppose this as part of our response to local government reorganisation.

You can back our campaign, supporting a more local local government, which works for residents, by signing our petition below:

Great day

The annual Scout Celebration of St George's Day, took place in Godalming (Sunday 27 April). Godalming Town Mayor Councillor Paul Rivers in attendance said “In his time St George is said to have killed dragons. In our time it is good to continue the fight against bullying and unkindness and to fight for justice and cooperation and kindness to friend and stranger".

Happy Easter 🥚❤️

These cute pink ducks are part of a cancer awareness campaign, and this one (no.4981) appeared in the churchyard yesterday, so it came to the Dawn Mass. A bit of an early start, but it seemed all right : ) Not sure where its next adventure will be.
A blessed Easter to you all. Christos Anesti!
