๐Ÿงน๐Ÿšฎ Neighbourhood Warden 14 has been working alongside a local charity following reports of a large amount of waste within a bin store area at Horsley Close, Craghead.

The area has now been fully cleansed and cleared โœ…โœจ

Large amounts of waste left in communal areas can quickly attract pests such as rats and other vermin ๐Ÿ€, create unpleasant smells, and negatively impact the local environment for nearby residents.

Please be advised that any further issues involving waste accumulation or fly-tipping in this area may result in enforcement action being taken. โš ๏ธ

If you would like to report environmental issues to us, please contact us on ๐Ÿ“ž 03000 260 000 or report online via https://doitonline.durham.gov.uk/ ๐Ÿ’ป

๐Ÿšฏ FLY TIPPING INVESTIGATIONS โ€“ ACTION TAKEN ๐Ÿšฏ

A 56-year-old male from Gateshead has admitted failing to ensure his household waste was transferred by a licensed waste carrier and disposed of lawfully after waste linked to him was discovered fly tipped at Great Lumley allotments in January 2026.

Neighbourhood Wardens 27 and 132 attended the scene and located evidence within the waste, leading to an investigation which was later passed to our Fly Tipping Team. During enquiries, the male stated that two males had knocked on his door and offered to remove the waste for a small fee. No checks were carried out to confirm they were licensed waste carriers or that the waste would be disposed of correctly.

The male accepted and paid in full a ยฃ400 Fixed Penalty Notice for the offence.

โš ๏ธ Remember โ€“ if you pay someone to remove your waste, you have a legal duty to ensure they are licensed and your waste is disposed of correctly. Failure to do so could result in enforcement action being taken against you.

In a separate investigation in Durham City, two females from Cramlington whose waste was found fly tipped failed to contact the investigating Warden or attend interviews to explain how their waste came to be fly tipped in County Durham.

Case files are now being prepared to prosecute both females for failing to assist an investigation as required under Section 108 of the Environment Act 1995.

โœ… Always ask to see a waste carrier licence before handing over your waste.
โœ… Make sure you receive details of where your waste is being taken.
โœ… Report fly tipping and suspicious activity to your local authority.

๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“š Last week, Neighbourhood Warden 29 visited Nettlesworth Primary School to speak with pupils about the important role Neighbourhood Wardens play within the community.

The children learned about the wide range of issues Wardens help deal with, including:
๐Ÿถ Dog fouling and dog issues
๐Ÿšฏ Littering and fly-tipping
๐Ÿšฒ Anti-social behaviour
๐Ÿš— Abandoned Vehicles

๐Ÿค Community reassurance and support

As part of the visit, the pupils also got involved in helping to improve their local area by stencilling dog fouling warning signs around the community. ๐Ÿพ

A huge thank you to all the staff and pupils at Nettlesworth Primary School for being so welcoming and enthusiastic throughout the session! ๐Ÿ‘
