Today we visited Woodland Bespoke Joinery Ltd in Norfolk to see progress on our most recent kitchen design. Constructed from iroko the kitchen draws inspiration from the designs of the Scottish arts and crafts architect Robert Lorimer, specifically his joinery at Hill of Tarvit Mansion & Garden NTS and Ardkinglas Estate, country houses we visited within the last year.

Our design is being beautifully executed, as ever, by Shaun and his talented team.

A recent visit to see garden room and sunken garden progress in Suffolk. All designed to complement an arts and crafts house we have been working on. Paths are now linking what were separate elements while also drawing the eye into the landscape. Cut tile detailing, which we used within the house, has been continued outside and incorporated into the garden (bases for steps to the sunken garden) and used for the garden room fireplace. For our garden external works we have referenced several early 20th century gardens within the village, the majority of which were designed by the architect Frank Jennings.

It’s a pleasure and a privilege to work with clients from concept to completion, and it means we get to design all joinery items (which we particularly enjoy) while ensuring the build is faithful to our drawings and achieves a consistently high finish.

A few of our favourite views and details from a Suffolk farmhouse project we completed a few years ago. Our approach was one of preservation, and many spaces were consolidated and left well alone.

We secured planning and listed building consent, wrote the Heritage Appraisal, produced construction details including joinery drawings, planned out a new garden and oversaw the work. The result was the gentle awakening of a rather special property.

The process of creating or restoring homes for clients often leads to long term working relationships, sometimes friendships. How satisfying it is to be asked to return and see work completed many years ago, now looking settled and being enjoyed. All these rooms were created within the space of a redundant squash court… a fun and happy project!

There are many positives of traditional architecture, and one of them is finding and working with local crafts people and commissioning work. Recently we had the pleasure of seeing this beautifully made single piece iron handrail being installed on site. The work by is exceptional and it finishes off our stairwell perfectly.

A site visit to see our garden room commission, and progress is impressive. Particularly rewarding is knowing the care and attention we gave the project at the design stage is being more than matched on site by the builders. It’s an honour seeing designs come to life, and this one feels particularly special.

The Loggia; currently on site and quickly taking shape, this special little building has drawn on the work of several arts and crafts architects before us. Our wonderful clients have encouraged us to use the materials we most enjoy and seeing 50mm handmade bricks, cut tile detailing, Douglas fire joinery and lime plaster all coming together is an absolute joy. We’ll be posting more very soon.
