These are the same politicians who have presided over years of financial mismanagement at this council, and who have been split down the middle on both Local Government Reorganisation and the fight to protect our greenbelt, while residents were left to wonder who was actually representing them. Labour, the Conservatives and the Lib Dems have all had their turn running Southend and most residents could tell you exactly what that has been like without needing to look it up. If you live in one of these wards and you want something different next May, the only way to get it is to vote Reform!

Following a legal challenge by Reform-led Essex County Council, the government has finally cancelled Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Essex.

LGR would have led to Southend Council merging with Rochford and Castle Point.

Reform in Southend have been pushing the Labour-led Southend Council to stop wasting time and money on LGR.

Now the national government has stopped it for them, after million of pounds have been wasted.

Local Government Reorganisation for Southend has officially been paused, with the Government withdrawing its decisions for Essex, Hampshire, Norfolk and Suffolk outright and pausing a further fourteen areas, including us, for review. Local elections in May 2027 will now go ahead on our existing boundaries, and Southend Council is no longer facing the abolition that Labour and the Conservatives were happy to wave through.

We will keep pushing to make sure any future proposals for Southend are decided with proper consultation rather than imposed from Whitehall.

Reports just in suggest that Local Government Reorganisation is being paused, with decisions on Essex, Hampshire, Norfolk and Suffolk withdrawn and a further fourteen areas, including Southend, paused for review.

Communities Secretary Angela Rayner is due to make the formal announcement in Parliament at 3pm today, so we are treating this with cautious optimism until we hear it from the Government directly. If confirmed, this would be the second time this year that Reform has taken on this Government and won, the first being the postponement of local elections earlier this year, which went ahead as planned after Reform challenged the decision. It would be a significant win for local democracy and for the Reform councils whose legal challenges forced this process into the open, and it would mean Southend Council is no longer facing the abolition that Labour and the Conservatives were happy to wave through.

We will update this page in due course once the statement has been made.

Cllr Daniel Cowan has published a long post accusing Reform and Conservative councillors of failing to engage with the Local Plan, and when our councillors replied with the actual record he hid their comments from public view, so residents scrolling past see his version and nothing else. He is still replying to us, he just does not want you to read what we said, which rather assumes nobody in Southend has ever heard of a screenshot.

So for the residents he wants to hide this from, here is the record.

Eight of our eleven councillors were only elected in May 2026, so being blamed for two years of a process that most of us were not even in the building for is quite the accusation. Lets be clear before we had 11 councillors we weren't invited to the working party.

When the Director of Planning, emailed asking for a nomination to the Working Group, Cllr James O'Rourke - St. Lukes Ward replied to his group leader Cllr Tony Cox - Councillor for West Shoebury the very same day, so the suggestion that Reform dragged its feet on nominations simply is not true.

What followed was this. He was given a few hours notice of the first meeting and no invitation was ever sent to him. He attended the second, which was very well attended across the political groups. The third meeting was cancelled. The fourth meeting was cancelled. Blaming other councillors for not attending meetings the administration itself cancelled takes a certain confidence, and hiding the replies that point it out takes rather more.

Then at Place Scrutiny last Thursday, opposition councillors proposed a genuine cross party Working Group and Labour and Green councillors voted it down.

What we will not do is stay quiet while the Leader briefs against colleagues in public and then quietly removes the right of reply, because he does not get to act with impunity and residents can judge this perfectly well once they can see both sides.

We have nothing to hide Cllr Daniel Cowan but why do you?
