Labour’s Local Government Reorganisation in Kent has been halted!

After months of Whitehall pressure to abolish Kent County Council, Medway Council and the districts, and replace them with four giant unitaries, Angela Rayner has pressed pause following last-minute legal advice. Local leaders have called it an omnishambles. Reform’s Kent County Council Leader, Linden Kemkaran, says around £1 million of taxpayer money has already gone on it — and councils had lined up a further £12 million as the “down-payment,” with full transition costs previously estimated at up to £139 million.

Staff were left in limbo.
Residents got chaos.
No one voted for this.

The one good result: May 2027 elections will now go ahead on existing council boundaries. That means Medway is still in play — and Labour can still be beaten here. One of the first things that Labour run Medway council did was cancel the festival of English Culture and the summer Dickens festival, instead funding Medway Pride.

A Reform UK led council would put British culture and identity first.

I’m proud to be attending Medway Pride today to celebrate and show my support for the LGBTQ+ community across Medway. 🌈

Pride is an important opportunity to celebrate equality, inclusion and the diversity within our community.

It was great to hear from Cllr Paul Webb who gave an excellent speech to our branch. Thank you Paul for your time and inspiration.

A great time was had by Reformers who attended the Chatham and Aylesford branch meeting tonight.

The special guest speaker Paul Webb (Cabinet Member for Community and Regulatory Services) informed the crowd of the many successes Reform has already achieved at Kent County Council after years of Tory complacency and mismanagement.

His upbeat motivational talk also included reflections on the recent election success in a hitherto Tory stronghold of Cuxton (Medway), when William Burvill triumphed.

Reform is going from strength to strength and delivering for the people of Kent.

Tris Osborne MP has just declared that Reform KCC has not completed as many potholes as to years prior.

We want to remind Tris that Medway has had a complete failure on his behalf and Medway Council of any completion whatsoever of potholes repairs or general road care. Residents are getting fed up.

Medway needs Reform.

Vince Maple intends to stand for the new North Kent authority when Medway Council disappears in 2028.

In the first part of our latest interview, Medway’s council leader discusses becoming the authority’s last leader, why he supports the creation of a council covering Medway, Gravesham and Dartford, and the many hurdles between wanting to stand and actually appearing on the ballot.

He also describes his relationship with Kent County Council’s leadership as “weak and complex”, backs Andy Burnham while disagreeing with him on electoral reform, and considers whether Gun Wharf could become the headquarters of the new authority.
