After what seems to have been a never-ending spell of unpredictable weather, fingers crossed it finally looks like we may be in for some dry and sunny days over the coming weeks. As those of you who are regular visitors will know, this is when the gardens at Parcevall look at their glorious best. We think that our new website, which can be found at parcevallhallgardens.co.uk shows both the beauty and location perfectly, especially as it has been enhanced with many images taken by the award-winning international garden photographer Richard Bloom. However as we all know, nothing can beat walking around the gardens, taking in both the sights and the atmosphere. And with the promise of resting weary legs afterwards by treating yourself to something from the range of tasty delights offered in our Tea Room by Love Brownies, that makes a visit tempting in every way.

Hello, how time flies! It doesn't seem that long ago when we were closing for the winter break, now here we are just a few days from reopening next Friday, 27th March for our 2026 season. There is a real buzz around the gardens at the moment and it has nothing to do with the arrival of the occasional early visiting bee! Head Gardener Phill and his team have been busy with preparation work for the new season since the day we closed to the public in October, working to make sure that the gardens look at their absolute best the next time you visit. We will remain open on a daily basis between 10am-6pm (last admittance 4.30pm) until the end of October. I can also confirm that 'Love Brownies' will be reopening the Tea Room, now with the addition of a new outdoor pagoda, to coincide with the gardens. They will be open and serving their usual range of tasty treats between 10am-4pm (weather permitting) through to the end of the season. We are also pleased to welcome a new member of the Gardens Team, Fionna (that is the correct spelling before anyone tells me off!), who will be joining Damian as point of contact at Visitor Reception. Fionna will be taking over from Heather, who we are pleased to say will still be around on occasion covering for holiday leave. We are hoping that Friday will also mark the launch of our new, updated Parcevall Hall Gardens website, so all being well, a lot to look forward to!

As you will recall, we are partial to reading a good book here at Parcevall Hall Gardens, that is when we have time to relax! A recent discovery during a visit to an antiquarian bookshop and being in perfect condition, a 1908 Original Edition of 'Children and Gardens' by the renowned horticulturalist and garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll VMH (1843-1932). In her lifetime Gertrude Jekyll created over 400 gardens in the United Kingdom, Europe and America. This copy of her book was a real find at £10, with the going rate online for this particular edition being in the region of between £35-£85. Although very much of its time, nevertheless this is a delightful book to read, with photographs and illustrations, one in particular that made me smile is of a Snapdragon seed-pod dressed as an old woman! Miss Jekyll gives a detailed description of how to achieve this stating that "Anyone who can dress dolls can make this". When complete give the finished item a shake and she will cry little black tears.
Some later editions of 'Children and Gardens' are available at more reasonable prices. Two recent publications that you might like to seek out are 'The Book of Garden Flowers' and 'The Book of Wild Flowers' both by Angie Lewin and Christopher Stocks. Both are very informative and beautifully illustrated throughout. Published by Thames & Hudson you can find them to buy online for in the region of £12 each and they should also be available to borrow for those with access to a library. Finally, staying on the subject of books, I have heard from a number of our Facebook Friends how much they enjoyed reading 'A Deadly Affair in the Dales', a crime novel written by good friend of Parcevall Hall Gardens, the author Maria Malone. The good news is that Maria's next book, the second in the Ali Wren series and also set in the fictional Yorkshire town of Heft, is scheduled for publication in the summer. I am sure that Maria will keep us updated as to when.

In the meantime we look forward to welcoming you back to Parcevall Hall Gardens when we reopen and please, don't forget to bring some good weather with you!

It's always a sad moment for everyone at Parcevall Hall Gardens as yet another season comes to an end. Again it has been a very busy year for visitors, with just a dip in footfall during September due to some poor weather. Though the Gardens have closed work still goes on for Head Gardener Phill and his team, clearing tree fall from the grounds after the recent storm and preparing for next season. As you can no doubt imagine due to Parcevall's location, the weather conditions can get fairly lively here across the winter months, so do try and spare them a thought as they battle on undeterred! A couple of weeks ago, Sunday Times best selling author Maria Malone paid her first visit to the Gardens following hearing about us through a friend. When home again Maria got in touch to say how much she had enjoyed looking around and that it was 'a very special place and magical'. After such a lovely comment we thought the least we could do is to give a mention to Maria's recently published crime story 'A Deadly Affair in the Dales', which is set in the fictitious Yorkshire Dales town of Heft. It's a really good read and with a second book in the series due out next year, don't be surprised to see it adapted for television in the future! With the arrival of the darker nights we will also be letting you know about some garden related books that you might enjoy reading. One was first published in 1908 and the others much more recently.
The team that help to keep Parcevall Hall Gardens running smoothly across the year really enjoy meeting you when you visit, whether if it's to answer any questions you may have concerning your own gardens, or just for a chat. The Tea Rooms run by 'Love Brownies' has also closed for the winter months, but will return to tempt you again when we reopen. So, from everyone involved in taking care of the Gardens, our Trust Directors, Garden's Staff and Visitor Reception, a huge thank you for coming to visit and we look forward to welcoming you back here again in the spring.

My, how this season appears to have passed by at a pace! Just to let you know that the Gardens will close to visitors for 2025 on Sunday 26th October. Looking at the weather forecast, the coming days look set fair, so maybe the perfect time to pay a final visit before the season ends. As ever it will be good to see you, oh and keep a look out for some exciting news in the next few months!

There’s a nice mention for Parcevall in today’s edition of The Guardian, being listed as third in their ‘UK’s best gardens to visit’ feature.

Just to let you know that ‘Living North’ magazine has a three page, full colour feature about Parcevall Hall Gardens in the current June issue, just published. As well as some lovely images, the magazine also talks to Head Gardener Phill Nelson, who is always a fascinating source of information and knowledge. If you are looking to buy a copy, the June edition of ‘Living North’ is available from WHSmiths, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Marks &Spencers, Morrisons, WHSmiths as well as from independent retailers eg local farm shops, priced £3.45. How time flies and here we are just a few days away from reopening for our new season on Saturday 29th March. Head Gardener Phill Nelson and his team have been working as hard as ever across winter closure to keep everything in good order. As well as general surface maintenance across the Gardens, a great deal of work has also taken place where it won't be noticed by our visitors and that is underground, with essential repairs to some of the rather elderly water pipe system. As with any other heritage property age takes its toll meaning there is a constant list of jobs to do to keep the Gardens in good repair for you to enjoy. So, no more experienced person than Phill to oversee that everything stays in order as he recently celebrated thirty-five years working at Parcevall Hall Gardens! Two key points for you to note are that although our opening times will remain at 10am - 6pm, last admission has now been brought forward to 4.30pm to give any late visitors more time to look around. We are also delighted to welcome our new Seasonal Assistant to the team in Heather, who will be working with Damian at Visitor Reception.
To coincide with the Gardens reopening to the public we are delighted to announce that the Love Brownies team return to the Tea Room for the duration of the new season. Open between 10am - 4pm daily (weather dependent) all the usual favourites will be available for you to enjoy, including soup, sandwiches, cream teas, ice cream and of course brownies and cakes. Perhaps best then to set off for a brisk walk to the top of the Gardens after you have been tempted by their sweet delights and not before! To whet your appetite in a different direction, watch out for news of a potential national television filming opportunity which will hopefully take place around the Gardens and Hall during the summer. We will keep you updated! There will also be news for you very soon of a glossy magazine article to be published in late May featuring Parcevall Hall Gardens. So, here's hoping for good weather and exciting times ahead! As ever we look forward to welcoming you back to visit us soon.

Just to let you know that the vacancy we recently advertised for a Seasonal Assistant has now been filled. All applicants have been informed, but we would like to thank those of you who 'spread the word' through friends, family and associates. This helped us a great deal in finding the perfect candidate quickly.

It appears that the days of being able to write 'After a season that blessed us with glorious weather' may be a thing of the past, but ever optimistic here at the Gardens we live in hope for the future!
However, despite a mix of warm sunny days and more than enough others that brought with them high winds and torrential rain, the visitor figures for this season have been remarkably good. A couple of appearances on national television, one on BBC Business Report in conjunction with Historic Houses, and the other on Channel 5 'Yorkshire Great and Small with Dan and Helen' have really helped to raise awareness and increase footfall. So, as we close Parcevall Hall Gardens to visitors until Spring 2025 (opening date to be confirmed) it is time to say a huge thank you to everyone for your continued support. Though people travel from far and wide to look around the Gardens we never take you, our loyal group of supporters, for granted. Over the years many of you have become familiar faces to the gardens staff who enjoy meeting you, having a chat and giving advice on gardening related matters to those who ask. You will be missed over the coming months, but on behalf of the Trust Directors, Head Gardener Phill Nelson and his team, Damian and Julia at Visitor Reception and Sara who updates you with wonderful images on the website, stay safe and well and we look forward to seeing you again in 2025.
