Hello, how time flies! It doesn't seem that long ago when we were closing for the winter break, now here we are just a few days from reopening next Friday, 27th March for our 2026 season. There is a real buzz around the gardens at the moment and it has nothing to do with the arrival of the occasional early visiting bee! Head Gardener Phill and his team have been busy with preparation work for the new season since the day we closed to the public in October, working to make sure that the gardens look at their absolute best the next time you visit. We will remain open on a daily basis between 10am-6pm (last admittance 4.30pm) until the end of October. I can also confirm that 'Love Brownies' will be reopening the Tea Room, now with the addition of a new outdoor pagoda, to coincide with the gardens. They will be open and serving their usual range of tasty treats between 10am-4pm (weather permitting) through to the end of the season. We are also pleased to welcome a new member of the Gardens Team, Fionna (that is the correct spelling before anyone tells me off!), who will be joining Damian as point of contact at Visitor Reception. Fionna will be taking over from Heather, who we are pleased to say will still be around on occasion covering for holiday leave. We are hoping that Friday will also mark the launch of our new, updated Parcevall Hall Gardens website, so all being well, a lot to look forward to!
As you will recall, we are partial to reading a good book here at Parcevall Hall Gardens, that is when we have time to relax! A recent discovery during a visit to an antiquarian bookshop and being in perfect condition, a 1908 Original Edition of 'Children and Gardens' by the renowned horticulturalist and garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll VMH (1843-1932). In her lifetime Gertrude Jekyll created over 400 gardens in the United Kingdom, Europe and America. This copy of her book was a real find at £10, with the going rate online for this particular edition being in the region of between £35-£85. Although very much of its time, nevertheless this is a delightful book to read, with photographs and illustrations, one in particular that made me smile is of a Snapdragon seed-pod dressed as an old woman! Miss Jekyll gives a detailed description of how to achieve this stating that "Anyone who can dress dolls can make this". When complete give the finished item a shake and she will cry little black tears.
Some later editions of 'Children and Gardens' are available at more reasonable prices. Two recent publications that you might like to seek out are 'The Book of Garden Flowers' and 'The Book of Wild Flowers' both by Angie Lewin and Christopher Stocks. Both are very informative and beautifully illustrated throughout. Published by Thames & Hudson you can find them to buy online for in the region of £12 each and they should also be available to borrow for those with access to a library. Finally, staying on the subject of books, I have heard from a number of our Facebook Friends how much they enjoyed reading 'A Deadly Affair in the Dales', a crime novel written by good friend of Parcevall Hall Gardens, the author Maria Malone. The good news is that Maria's next book, the second in the Ali Wren series and also set in the fictional Yorkshire town of Heft, is scheduled for publication in the summer. I am sure that Maria will keep us updated as to when.
In the meantime we look forward to welcoming you back to Parcevall Hall Gardens when we reopen and please, don't forget to bring some good weather with you!
