Sheffield Muslim Votes Backs Sheffield Greens After Labour Ultimatum Over "Zionism is Racism" Motion
Sheffield Muslim Votes welcomes today's decision by Sheffield Green Party to reject demands from Sheffield Labour that they distance themselves from the "Zionism is Racism" motion recently adopted at the Green Party Conference.
On Thursday 15 October, Labour Party headquarters announced it would end power-sharing agreements with the Green Party on local councils across the country. Sheffield City Council, currently run by a Labour–Green coalition, is among those affected.
Within hours of that announcement, Council Leader Cllr Fran Belbin, acting on behalf of Sheffield Labour, wrote to Sheffield Greens demanding that they disassociate themselves from the conference motion. We regard this as a shameless act of political blackmail, and one that has revealed the true character of Sheffield Labour.
Sheffield Muslim Votes does not endorse any political party. However, we wish to state clearly and on the record that we fully support the "Zionism is Racism" motion.
We would go further. In our view, Zionism is apartheid, ethnic cleansing, murder, r**e, torture and genocide.
We commend Sheffield Greens for standing by their principles in the face of political pressure.
