I was so sad not to be able to get to the literacy festival in Hay-on-Wye to see Charlie Mackesy today.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse has inspired my work with children so deeply, and I had really hoped to hear him speak.

My lovely daughter-in-law went for me, told Charlie how much his work means to me, and brought back a signed copy of his new book. The kindness of them both honestly meant the world to me. Thank you đź’–đź’–

At the beginning of this year, I completed a Therapeutic Social Work course with Karen Treisman and Joanne Alper — and whilst the learning itself was incredibly valuable, I’ve found myself reflecting just as much on the environment we learned in.

The space felt calm, nurturing, thoughtful and safe.
It reminded me that trauma-informed practice is not only about the approaches we use, but also about the environments we create around people.

Being held so carefully within that learning space has genuinely influenced how I think about my own work.

Living by the sea, in a place that feels grounding and restorative, has started to spark ideas about creating similar spaces for other Life Story practitioners — spaces for creativity, reflection, connection and meaningful learning together.

Because the environment matters too 🤍

This quote by Charlie Mackesy from The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse always stays with me when working alongside children 🤍

“So you know all about me?
Yes, said the horse.
And you still love me?
We love you all the more.”

In my work, I think a lot about what it means for a child to feel truly known and still accepted.

So often, the behaviours we see, both past and present are rooted in survival. They made sense at the time. They protected something.

When we work alongside parents with kindness, empathy, and without judgement, something really powerful can begin to happen.

Children can start to wonder…
What if I am still loved, even with all of this?

And from there, we can gently support them to explore their story in a way that feels safe enough.

Not to rewrite it.
Not to rush it.
But to understand it…together.

If this resonates, save for later or share with someone supporting a child.
