Remember! Richborough Roman Fort will be free to enter this weekend (12th & 13th September) when we shall be taking part in Sandwich Heritage Open Days. Our team will be ready to share the stories and history of this spectacular site both days. On Sunday there will be a free guided tour of the Amphitheatre at noon. No booking required!

Road show: if you are looking for directions when leaving Richborough Roman Fort we have a very fine and elaborate sign post which will point you in the direction of Dover, London, Canterbury... and Rome (1176 miles due south east).
Make sure you brush up on your Latin beforehand though!

We regularly discover building material and ceramic shards which are carefully inspected by our highly skilled curatorial team. Roman goddess of wisdom, justice, law, trade and warfare. Minerva, had a place at the centre of life at Richborough Roman Fort. Here we see her taking the form of a weight, ensuring both the accuracy and honesty of trade.

During the Second World War the area east of Richborough Roman Fort was a transit camp for 5,000 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe. At the Fort itself, defensive trenches and gun pits were dug. Soldiers who carried out the work were told to sift the soil to check for Roman coins as they dug.

Spaced out: the ancient walls of Richborough Roman Fort were witness to a spectacular sight today — a 20 foot kite in the shape of an astronaut flew across the sky courtesy of Kent Kite Flyers. The club promise to come again with even more extraordinary arial creations. Watch our skies!
