Last weekend we had 15 volunteers join us throughout the day to help us cut back the Italian Alder growing in and around the SUD pits along the south section of the park. This was the most people we’ve had join us in one session and what a difference it makes! Having more of us allowed us to complete 3 of the 4 SUDs.

The material that we cut down was used to create a densely packed deadhedge that will provide protection for many insects, birds and hedgehogs!

Italian alder is very hard to control and almost always grows back. So our job is to maintain rather than remove. With that being said, to make this easier for us in the future we have left about 2ft of the stems so please mind your step if you wonder off the paths.

We’re coming to the end of a very dry summer. The lack of rain has meant a shorter life for many flower species. This is cause by the flowers getting stressed by the heat and lack of water leading to them to go to seed quicker.

There are still some late season flowers around the park for you to keep an eye out for.

Great team effort from the Country Parks volunteers at the weekend clearing another chalk mound of scrub to expose the chalk.

We hope to establish some butterfly friendly flowers on the chalk to hep increase their numbers. The shapes of the mounds can also act as a natural windbreak.

We are currently in the middle of the Butterfly Conservations Big Butterfly Count! Between Friday 18th July and Sunday 10th August choose a place to spot butterflies and moths and count how many you see within 15 minutes.

We have many species of butterfly around the country park.

Be part of this nationwide survey and help take the pulse of nature. Butterfly declines reveal the poor health of the environment. We need your sightings.
