Salford Youth Justice Service

Salford Youth Justice Service The aim of the Salford Youth Justice Service is to reduce offending and re-offending of young people.

The Youth Offending Service is made up of representatives from the police, probation service, social services, health, education, drugs and alcohol misuse. Because the service incorporates representatives from a wide range of services, it can respond to the needs of young offenders in a comprehensive way.

One of our young people had the opportunity this week to work with Odd Arts to complete his Bronze Arts Award. The young person had the chance to watch a live piece of theatre, create his own graffiti art and work with a top Manchester spoken word poet- he even wrote his own amazing poetry!
We are so proud of the young person, he threw himself into the project and jumped out of his comfort zone to create some wonderful work. Well done!!!!!
Big thank you to Odd Arts for organising this opportunity, we had such a great time!!!

So the new recruited volunteers are hard at work, learning new skills to become a community panel member. We would like to thank them for giving their time to commit to our young people and the service.

COULD YOU BE A:
Community Panel Member?

What is a Youth Justice Panel?
Youth offender panels are a way of dealing with young people who commit crime. Local people take the lead in challenging young offenders to take responsibility for their actions and helping them to change their behaviour.

A young person is referred to the panel by the courts through a sentence called a Referral Order which is given to 10-17year olds who plead guilty to a first conviction. A Referral Order can be given for three to twelve months, depending on the seriousness of the crime.

What do youth justice panel members do?
The panel meets with the young person and their parents/carers to talk about the reasons for the young person’s offending behaviour and to discuss a way forward. The victim is encouraged to attend the meeting to tell the young person how the crime has affected them. A contract is agreed with the young person this contract includes activities to repair the harm caused and address the causes of their behaviour.

Who can volunteer?
Volunteers need to be 18 or over and live, work or study in the Salford. We want to hear from all ethnic and social backgrounds who represent the local community.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, we are having a questions and answers session on Thursday 24th February at 5:30pm in our office. If you are interested, please contact Sue Cox on 07773597812 or email on [email protected]

We look forward to hearing from you.

Salford Youth Justice Service and T4U Charity Shoebox Christmas Appeal 2021
This year at Salford Youth Justice, staff and young people have been involved in the Christmas Shoebox Appeal run by the T4U charity.
T4U was set up in 2006 and now has outreach in a number of countries. As well as taking teams to provide practical hands on support, the charity also focus on an holistic approach to helping those in need including the Christmas Shoebox appeal, financial sponsorship, resources, training and development.
This year our shoebox gifts will travel to orphanages in Belarus; and to deprived communities in Bosnia, Georgia, Romania and Moldova.
Our shoebox gifts are given to people forced to leave their homes through decades long conflict; to those without homes; to children who have lost parents or been abandoned; and to those who face intense discrimination in their own countries, forcing them to live on the outskirts of their societies.
Staff and young people here at Salford YJS have spent time creating gift boxes for different age groups, that will hopefully bring a little bit of joy this Christmas!

In our reparation sessions with our young people at Salford Youth justice Service we have been making Christmas tree advent calendars out of toilet roll tubes and filled them with chocolates. I took them to St Ann’s Hospice today along with some Christmas cards that the young people have also made. They were all really pleased with them.

WE MET THE ARMY…
This half term we were very lucky to get a visit from the Cavalry, there were no horses this time but they gave an interactive presentation on what they do, their training and uniforms, some of us were even able to try bits on! We were able to ask them questions about joining the army and what is would be like – some of the young people working with us have even started their application.

We then completed Team Building challenges which were really fun – the young people who attended demonstrated some brilliant skills.

This week we celebrate our Volunteers at Salford Youth Justice. We’re so lucky to have a team of dedicated, compassionate and caring people who have continued to support us throughout this extremely challenging year. Our service couldn’t operate without them so we’d like to take this opportunity to ‘Cheer for our Volunteers’.

Thank you all for your time commitment.

The Young People worked alongside ODD Arts to direct and produce a film about the Youth Justice Service – it will be used to show to first time entrants into the service to support with their induction.

They also created some issue based art and chose the subject of drugs and poverty in Salford. (See the attached photos)

They have worked so hard and have shown a great level of determination and dedication to complete the qualification (which is the equivalent to an A Level).

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Odd Arts and the staff that supported the young people in order to accomplish this incredible achievement.

On Friday 21st June, our Victim Services Coordinator and Creative Lead, Kate, was invited to the Launch of ODD Arts new issue based workshop and play; ‘Knockout Blow’.

It tells the story of Len Johnson while raising awareness of local collective history and racial inequalities.

As a service, we’ve worked closely with Odd Arts for a while – they’ve provided us with some spectacularly engaging resources and this looks like it’s going to be another hit!

We really do recommend them - Email [email protected] to find out more.
