Libraries should be places of learning, openness and inclusion — not political censorship.

St Helens Labour has condemned the Reform-led council administration’s decision to withdraw books from library displays, warning that it risks undermining the role libraries play in supporting diverse voices, education and free access to information.

This comes alongside the administration’s decision to withdraw council support for important community events such as Pride and Refugee Week — events that celebrate inclusion, diversity and the values that make St Helens a welcoming borough for everyone.

Our libraries belong to everyone in our community and should remain welcoming spaces for all residents.

🌈 Proud to stand with our community at St Helens Pride 2026 🌈

What an incredible celebration of love, equality, inclusion and community spirit at this year’s St Helens Pride.

It was fantastic to see so many people come together at The World Of Glass to celebrate diversity and show that St Helens is a borough where everyone should feel safe, welcome and proud to be themselves.

A huge thank you to Miguel & Emma, the organisers, volunteers, performers, stallholders and everyone behind the scenes who worked so hard to make the event such a success.

We were proud to attend, support and celebrate alongside our amazing local LGBTQ+ community.

Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat, shared a smile and helped make the day so special.

Today, we commemorate 82 years since the Normandy landings, beginning the liberation of Western Europe.

We honour the bravery and sacrifice of all those who fought and defeated fascism.

We will remember them.

What happened at the volunteer fair at St Helens Minster was completely unacceptable.

No one should ever be subjected to racist or discriminatory comments simply because of who they are or the community they support. The remarks made towards a local service and member of staff do not reflect the values of our town or the spirit of the event.

We stand with the organisations, volunteers and staff affected by this incident and fully support the statement made by Sally Yeoman and Halton & St Helens Voluntary and Community Action. Racism and prejudice have no place in St Helens.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the event a positive celebration of community action, inclusion and kindness. Those values will always be stronger than hate.

Today, during a volunteer fair hosted by our organisation in St Helens, a member of the public made discriminatory comments towards a local service and the member of staff attending the event.

The individual stated that the service should not be there and that support and services should only be for white British people.

We want to be absolutely clear: racism, discrimination and prejudice have no place at our events, in our organisation or in our communities.

Our volunteer fair was created to bring people together and showcase the many organisations working to support and strengthen our community. We are proud to provide a space where local groups can connect with residents, share information about their work and encourage community involvement.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion or background. We stand in solidarity with all organisations, volunteers and community members who may experience discrimination, and we remain committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Thank you to the many attendees, volunteers, organisations and St Helens Minster
who helped make today’s event a positive and inspiring celebration of community action.

STATEMENT ON THE RECENT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE ST HELENS REFORM COUNCIL REGARDING REFUGEE WEEK

We are disappointed to see Reform UK attempt to politicise Refugees Week in St Helens through misleading claims about council funding.

Reform stated that “St Helens Council will not be engaging with, nor funding Refugees Week this year” and claimed that “£60,000 of taxpayers’ money” had been earmarked for the event. However, this funding forms part of a wider grant provided directly by central government to support refugee integration and community cohesion.

We have contacted the Council, who have confirmed that this funding will not be lost or returned. Instead, it will continue to be used within the refugee support service to help people integrate into their new lives, access employment opportunities, and build stable, independent futures within our communities.

While we are saddened that the Council has stepped back from involvement in Refugees Week because of the political direction of the current administration, we are pleased that the funding itself has been retained for this important service.

Importantly, we are proud to see our local voluntary organisations, volunteers, and community groups coming together to ensure Refugees Week still goes ahead. That spirit of compassion, solidarity, and community is what St Helens is all about.

We love seeing our communities come together, and we are proud to be part of .
