โš ๏ธ FIRE SAFETY WARNING FOR MASSAGE THERAPISTS โš ๏ธ

Did you know towels used with mineral oils can self-heat and catch fire โ€” even AFTER washing?

Yesterday, St Austell Fire Station attended a fire involving towels that had been washed and left in a pile. The towels had been contaminated with massage oils and began to self-heat, eventually igniting without a flame or spark.

๐Ÿ”ฅ WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?
Some oils oxidise when exposed to air. This chemical reaction produces heat. When towels are left bundled together, that heat canโ€™t escape. The temperature builds until the fabric can ignite spontaneously.

๐Ÿงบ HOW TO REDUCE THE RISK:
โœ”๏ธ Use the minimum amount of oil possible
โœ”๏ธ Wash towels thoroughly with extra detergent
โœ”๏ธ Rinse well to remove oil residue
โœ”๏ธ Remove towels immediately after washing
โœ”๏ธ AIR DRY towels fully and separately
โœ”๏ธ Never leave warm towels piled up or in baskets
โœ”๏ธ Ensure towels are completely dry before storage
โœ”๏ธ Store in a cool, ventilated space

๐Ÿ’จ AIR DRY โ€” DONโ€™T FRY.

Please share this post with other therapists, spa staff, salons, gyms and wellness professionals. A simple change in laundry practice could prevent a serious fire.

Stay safe.

Green Watch have been busy drilling with BA (breathing apparatus) and practicing search techniques in large and complex buildings. The teams used obscuration masks to block their vision, replicating a smoke filled environment, to make the training scenario more realistic.
