TW: injuries

Strimmer season has started, and with it comes hedgehog casualties. I’ve had to send 2 horrifically injured hedgehogs to be euthanised this week. Please take care with all garden tools.

Check undergrowth and long grass before strimming / hedges and thick undergrowth before cutting.

Gently lift / check inside compost heaps, garden waste piles, leaf piles etc before clearing / plunging forks or spades in. Many hedgehogs are still hibernating in these popular nesting sites.

Last night, at 10pm; four teenagers ( 2 males, two females ) took pleasure in kicking a young hedgehog around in the road at Warren Cresent just outside Shirley Warren primary school in Southampton. They ran off when confronted by a resident who then rushed the hedgehog straight to me.

The injuries inflicted by these beasts were horrific and the hedgehog had to be put to sleep. She was an otherwise healthy, beautiful young hedgehog before she was cruelly tortured to near death. The vile perpetrators were heard laughing about it and egging each other on.

This incident has been reported to the police. If anyone in the area has CCTV ( eg. the school car park? ) or witnessed the four of them, or saw them fleeing ( they split up when departing the scene, the two boys running off along Warren cresent, the two girls ran the opposite way towards the roundabout ) or knows the culprits, please help us to get justice for the poor hedgehog.
