At last, good news for the people of Romford and Havering this morning, after more than a year of disruption and chaos...
"The Gallows Corner flyover and roundabout has fully re-opened to traffic today, following the completion of strengthening and refurbishing works, as well as major water infrastructure work by Essex & Suffolk Water. All remaining traffic management and diversion routes have been removed. "
As the local MP for the area, whilst I celebrate that finally the lives of my constituents and those from other parts of Essex and the east side of London can return to some kind of normality, with drivers now able to travel freely through this busy road junction, where the A12/A127 meet, we have nothing to thank the Mayor of London or TfL for.
The failure to assess the full nature of what was required at this location and carry out the work quickly and efficiently by working round the clock to get the job done, has been devastating for local people and I believe compensation from TfL is owed to businesses and residents who have suffered so much.
I have campaigned for a new, safer and enhanced road layout at Gallows Corner since my election as MP for Romford in 2001, raising the issue in the House of Commons, with government ministers and TfL on countless occasions over twenty five years.
Whilst the end result is not the ambitious option I argued for, I am relived that at last this long running saga is over and we can all get on with our lives once again.
There are still some outstanding issues and concerns that I will be taking up with TfL to ensure the maximum safety at this junction for pedestrians and drivers alike.
