Museum of Richmond Richmond's Museum

Free Admission! Tuesday to Friday: 11am - 5pm
Saturday: 10am - 4pm The colourful displays span from medieval times to the present day.

For centuries Richmond has been a centre of fashion and the arts, as well as home to several of Britain’s monarchs. The Museum celebrates the rich heritage of Richmond, Ham, Petersham and Kew and, through the exhibition and education programmes, all other areas of the borough. It is ideal for family visits: admission is free, and there are always lots of activities to keep children entertained. The museum is close to the River Thames and to Richmond Green.

Pausing this Friday to reflect on the stories woven into Panel 5 of the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt. 🕯️

Behind every single piece of fabric on this panel was a real life—a friend, a partner, a sibling, a child. A person who laughed, loved, and left an indelible mark on the world.

As we head into the weekend, we carry their memory with us. Wishing our community a peaceful and reflective evening. Let us know in the comments what remembrance means to you. 👇❤️

This panel was made for Tony by their friend Susan Sneddon. Their friend Jason also wrote a poem, which is included on the panel. It is incredibly moving. If you head to the UK AIDS Quilt YouTube channel you can listen to a recording of the poem.

Just Another Day?

Toying nervously with the ring on my finger
Death hands in the air, the smell forever will linger.
Friends who care, know not what to say,
Family carry on: to them it’s just another day.
‘It’s for the best’ ‘not more pain’ ‘he’s in peace’
These are the people who knew you the least.
Black car comes box on tow
Plain and ugly. No pink does it show.
Follow the leader - bling leading blind -
to a place where they burn some of our kind.
Pound of feet from people who mourn.
My heart fills with sorrow, hatred and scorn.
A figure dressed in black speaks and I shed a tear:
No kind loving words, no music to hear,
No trace of my friends a love I once knew
Just emptiness - nothing here to remind me of you.
I cannot stop crying, I can’t tell you why,
Just repeating these words ‘Why did you die?’
A lever is pulled, in draws the curtain,
With no sense of comforting, I feel so uncertain!
Outside it’s raining: I see God has been crying.
Does he feel the pain you felt in your dying?
My grief bellows out, it won’t halt, it won’t end:
Tear drenched and wet clutched in the arms of my friend.
Together we cry mourning our brother,
Pillars for each other being father and mother,
Now part of us missing like a beach without sand,
Angels without halos, the world without land.
Drive back in the car with nothing to say,
Pay our respects, then be on our way.
Inside the cold room no sadness no one weeps,
Instead food and cheap booze where once you did sleep.
Talking of houses, banks, parties, times old and new:
Do these people care? Did they really love you?
To meet once again we must first say goodbye:
Friendships are eternal. They can never die!

For Tony I miss you love, Jason October 1990

In this panel, Tony is remembered with records with what we can assume are some of their favourite songs - they clearly loved their music

At the top of the panel there appears to be some lyrics, or a poem, but we can't place them. Does anyone recognise them? If so, please let us know in the comments 🎶🎵🎶

"I get a kick from the power
Like water for the flowers
Don’t want advice from above
From your heart I want your love."

On the top right of the panel, we celebrate the life of Andrew Carter OAM. We know a great deal about him because of his activism.Andrew was a teacher from Perth, Australia and co-founder of the Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt Project, in October 1989 he received the AIDS Trust award for outstanding service in community awareness of the AIDS epidemic. On June 10 1991 this inspirational and truly remarkable man received another well deserved honour - he was named in the Queen’s birthdays honours list, and received the medal of the Order of Australia Medal for promoting community awareness of HIV and AIDs. We do not know who made this panel.

At the top left of the panel, there are a few more clues to this person's story. We have a name: Jamie Fraser. We have the names of some of his loved ones, who signed his quilt. We can guess his ancestry or home was Scotland, near Inverness, because of the inclusion of a thistle, a couple of Lock Ness Monsters, some tartan fabric and a ship called the Marchioness of Inverness. There is also a black cat included - perhaps a beloved pet?

There is not a lot we can say for sure about some of the panels on this quilt. This is for a few reasons:

Stigma: Many families were ostracized or chose to hide the cause of death, leading to anonymous submissions to avoid social prejudice.

Anonymous Creation: A significant number of panels were created by friends, partners, or grief-stricken family members without accompanying notes, keeping the individual’s personal life a mystery.

Lost History and Storage: The quilt was stored in a domestic garage for years and narrowly survived a house fire in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, risking the loss of accompanying documentation.

Voluntary Nature: Panels were often produced individually or in small groups during the height of the crisis, not always resulting in a documented, central archive of each person's story. So whilst we may have names and dates on the quilts, we may have very little other information about the individual they commemorate.

And this is the case for Ken and Jed - we have their names, when they were born and when they passed. But we also know they were loved and those who loved them wanted to celebrate them.
