Richard Suchorzewski: UK Business Insights Abolish The Welsh Assembly Party believes that the Welsh Assembly, now called Senedd, has made Wales worse off while enriching its politicians.

It is also destroying the UK Union. It needs to be abolished by voting for us in the 2026 Senedd Elections.

Abolish the Welsh Assembly Party Statement on the 2026 Senedd Elections
PRESS RELEASE 03.03.26 - 22.55

The Abolish the Welsh Assembly Party today confirms that it will not be fielding candidates in the forthcoming Senedd elections.

This decision follows a careful assessment of the new closed-list D’Hondt electoral system and the current political landscape in Wales.

Under the revised system, it is highly unlikely that smaller parties can secure representation without dividing the vote of those who question the direction of devolution. After detailed consideration, we believe the responsible course of action is not to fragment that vote.

Party Leader Richard Suchorzewski said:

"Our priority has always been the Welsh taxpayer and effective governance. Standing in this election would be largely symbolic and risks splitting the anti-devolution vote, potentially strengthening those committed to further entrenching and expanding the Senedd.

While we remain committed to the principle of abolition, we recognise that other parties now have a more realistic path to representation under the new system. We do not intend to stand in the way of that opportunity simply to maintain a presence on the ballot paper. This is a strategic decision based on electoral reality."

The Party continues to oppose the expansion of the Senedd to 96 Members and will maintain its focus on issues of cost, accountability and performance within Welsh governance.

We thank our supporters for their continued loyalty and understanding. Our principles remain unchanged, even if our electoral tactics evolve.

Merry Christmas to everyone in Wales and the United Kingdom.

For many families, the cost of politics keeps rising while public services struggle. We believe Wales deserves better value, better accountability, and better government.

Why did Plaid Cymru beat Reform by nearly 4,000 votes in Caerphilly?

It was the highest ever Senedd election turnout (in percentage terms), Reform had a significant number of people on the ground virtually everyday canvassing, Nigel Farage and his top team visited a number of times and the polls put Reform in the lead. Despite this intensity (which cannot be repeated next May as there will be 16 constituencies to fight) Plaid still won.

Let us know your thoughts please!

Abolish has taken the decision not to contest the forthcoming Caerphilly by-election following the unfortunate demise of Hefin David. Its statement quotes:

"With a full Senedd election just over six months away, holding a by-election now is, in our view, an unnecessary waste of taxpayers’ money. Public funds should be spent on essential services, not on a short-term vote that will soon be replayed.

The by-election will also be run under a first-past-the-post system - one that will no longer apply next year. For that reason, we believe our time, energy, and resources are better invested in preparing for the election that really matters: the 2026 Senedd election, when the new system will be in place (extending the number from 60 to 96 seats – regrettably yet another waste of taxpayers’ money).

Our priority is clear: to build momentum, share our message, and give the people of Wales the real choice they deserve - to Abolish the Senedd.

We look forward to putting our case strongly and directly to the people of Wales when the full election is held."

Due to the sudden and unfortunate demise of MS Hefin David there will shortly be an election in the Caerphilly Constituency for a Senedd seat.

Let us know if you think Abolish should run or not bearing in mind that in May 2026 there will be another election.

Also Please bear in mind that the other mainstream parties (including Reform) are in favour of keeping the Senedd and Scottish Parliaments

The original total cost of the Senedd Building which was opened on 1st March 2006 was £69.6 million, (which included £49.7 million in construction costs).

According to the Architects Journal (29 July 1999) "First Secretary Alun Michael told assembly members last week that the cost of the new building would be £12.5 million"

This rapidly rose to £24 million and then ended up more than double again.

Can we really believe the current predictions?

Even if accurate, why are we squandering limited resources on this and 36 extra unnecessary politicians when our health and education services are in such a poor condition and we have an increase in homelessness and food banks in Wales?

We believe the Welsh taxpayer is being taken for a ride in order to enrich a group of politicians which we believe add little to nothing to the improvement of Wales.
