🎉 OXFORD ROAD PUBLIC TOILETS – RENOVATION WORK STARTS TUESDAY! 🎉
We’re delighted to announce that the long-awaited renovation of the Oxford Road Public Toilets will begin on Tuesday 1 September.
This is a significant investment in facilities for residents, businesses and visitors to Hay-on-Wye, and will see the toilet block extensively refurbished and improved.
🚧 How will the work be phased?
Phase 1:
The main Ladies’ and Gents’ toilets will be closed while the first phase of renovation work takes place.
However, toilet facilities will remain available, with the unisex and accessible toilet facilities at the rear of the building remaining OPEN.
Phase 2:
Once Phase 1 is complete, the main Ladies’ and Gents’ toilets will REOPEN.
Work will then move to the rear facilities, with the accessible toilet and 24-hour toilet temporarily closed for renovation.
This phased approach means that public toilet facilities will continue to be available throughout the works.
🛍️ ALL SHOPS & BUSINESSES ARE OPEN AS USUAL
The Oxford Road Craft Centre and surrounding businesses remain fully open and accessible throughout the works. Please continue to visit, shop and support our fantastic local businesses while the improvements are underway.
📅 When will the work be finished?
The programme begins on Tuesday 1 September, with the intention of completing the entire renovation by the October half-term.
There will inevitably be a little disruption while such a substantial improvement is carried out, and we would like to thank residents, visitors and neighbouring businesses for their patience and understanding.
After a great deal of work behind the scenes, we’re incredibly pleased to finally see this project getting underway and look forward to unveiling much-improved public toilet facilities for Hay-on-Wye this autumn. 🚻✨

The session is free and is part of a Powys wide programme that has been running for over three years. To date over 400 people across Mid Wales have attended the session and have become 'Cancer Champions'.
Becoming a Cancer Champion simply means individuals have the skills and knowledge to have a conversation about the importance of early reporting of possible signs and symptoms and uptake of screening invitations when the opportunity arises.
The session covers an introduction to cancer, why early diagnosis can make a difference, the screening programmes, prostate cancer, signposting for cancer support and managing tricky conversations.
Once trained Cancer Champions do as much or as little as they want and are supported by me as the Powys Cancer Champion Coordinator. Further opportunities for additional training and to feedback insights from the community are available but are optional

Pump Track Update
Firstly, thank you to everyone that completed the survey, we had an amazing 175 responses.
This week, councillors met with the Powys Cemeteries Board to discuss one of the potential sites for the new pump track — the field adjacent to the cemetery.
It was a very constructive meeting, and importantly, we were able to listen to the Board’s concerns and discuss how we can address them as we move the project forward.
We had already proposed a number of measures to ensure the pump track can operate alongside the cemetery respectfully. These include a solid boundary and tree screening between the track and the cemetery, providing privacy for people visiting loved ones. We have also proposed closing the track during funerals and ensuring the track is monitored during opening hours.
The main concern raised by the Cemeteries Board was how the Town Council will manage anti-social behaviour at the track. We have agreed to follow up with a clear and robust plan setting out how we will manage this, including monitoring, opening arrangements and how any issues will be dealt with.
Overall, the meeting was very positive, and we are making good progress towards delivering the pump track.
There is still work to do, but we are committed to finding solutions to the concerns raised and making this project happen for the young people and wider community of the town.

🚗 PARKING FOR BRECON ROAD & CHURCH STREET RESIDENTS

Hay Town Council is pleased to let local residents know that the Recreational Field on Brecon Road will be open for parking on:

🕡 6.30pm – 8.30pm

This is to provide additional parking for residents of Brecon Road and Church Street to help residents clear the roads for the Lloyds women's cycle race.

Vehicle's can be collected after the road closures have been removed.

HAY TOWN COUNCIL
Invitation to Tender – Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA)

Hay Town Council invites suitably qualified and experienced contractors to submit quotations for the provision of an annual Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) on land owned by the Council within Hay-on-Wye.

The contract will cover a three-year period (2026, 2027 and 2028).

The purpose of the survey is to assist the Council in meeting its duty of care under the Occupiers' Liability Acts 1957 and 1984. The assessment will include all trees located within falling distance of public footpaths, highways, neighbouring properties and other areas where there is a foreseeable risk to people or property.

Historically, the Council has sought quotations on an annual basis. However, to ensure consistency in surveying, reporting and risk management, the Council intends to appoint a single contractor for the full three-year term, subject to satisfactory performance.

🎄 Volunteers Needed – Help Raise Funds for Hay's Christmas Lights! 🎄

We're looking for a few volunteers to help run a fundraising car park on Saturday 22nd August afternoon.

Even a couple of hours of your time would make a huge difference and help us raise money to keep Hay looking festive this Christmas. Duties will mainly involve directing vehicles and collecting parking fees.

We've been made aware that the gate at Gipsy Castle Playground has been damaged.

This playground is for everyone to enjoy, and damage like this costs time and money to repair—money that could be spent improving our community instead.

We're arranging for the gate to be repaired as soon as possible. If you witnessed what happened or have any information, please get in touch with Hay Town Council.
