We just wanted to pay massive credit to our friends at Bridgend County Independents who worked extremely hard to lower the Labour proposed Council Tax increase by 0.7%.

We would also like to acknowledge that Porthcawl Councillor Rob Smith voted for the BCI amendment as proposed and against the Labour budget that was ultimately passed and sees our Council Tax increase by 4.7%. A 24.5% increase since 2022.

We are afraid to say that our amendment to lower Council Tax by 0.7% did not pass when it went to the democratic vote.

All Bridgend County Independent Councillors voted for our amendment to lower Council Tax.

All Bridgend County Independents voted against the Labour administration propsal of a 4.7% increase to your Council Tax.

The Labour proposal did pass however with a majority of votes in the meeting.

Your Council Tax will rise by 4.7% for 2026-27

Tomorrow BCBC will vote on its budget for 2026/2027.

There are two proposals.

Firstly the Labour proposal for an increase of 4.7% which includes £736,000 unallocated within the budget.

The other is an amendment by the Bridgend County Independents opposition group which gives that unallocated money back to tax payers and reduces the rise to 4%.

There are two choices.

Either support the BCI amendment or support Labour’s 4.7% unnecessary increase. Any abstentions support Labour’s proposal.

How will Porthcawl’s BCBC’s councillors vote? We sincerely hope that they vote in our best interests and not that of their Party, or worse still, not vote at all.

Again, our friends at Bridgend County Independents are walking the walk with the scrutiny of this Labour administration.

Nothing from the Conservatives or Reform and we will be watching proceedings extremely closely to see the details and how the Parties who claim to represent us vote on this amendment

Now that the Labour administration at BCBC have finalised their budget propsal for presentation to Full Council next Wednesday, we at Bridgend County Independents can confirm that we have contacted the Chief Officer - Finance, Housing and Change to submit an alternative proposal for consideration.

Once our proposal has been deemed as lawful and balanced we will publish full details.

We need an Independent administration in BCBC and we will be working hard to achieve that.

Every year since 2022, Bridgend Labour have cut the schools’ budget.

They have now u-turned from their original proposal to cut a further 1% this year due to overwhelming outrage and anger from teachers, parents and of course your independent councillors over the past 3 years! All while staff in our schools have continued to work harder for our children.

Now they are trying to claim credit for not cutting the schools’ budget this year, saying they are the cabinet that listen!

They are acting like a pickpocket seeking praise for not robbing schools this week.

No amount of shameless spin will make people forget their cruel assault on our children’s education. Nor will they be forgiven!

Their time is running out and it can’t come soon enough. In the meantime we will carry out our duty to scrutinise this proposed budget and work on your behalf.
