The Council is providing an update on the proposed Cynon Gateway Link Road scheme – a major transportation investment in the north of the Cynon Valley that remains a commitment.

The proposed project will deliver a new 1.2km link road connecting the A4059 Aberdare Bypass (at a point between Trecynon and Penywaun roundabouts) to the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road (at Croesbychan).

The strategic scheme has many advantages – strengthening north-south transport links, improving access across the area, easing traffic congestion in Llwydcoed and other local routes, and supporting economic growth within the Cynon Valley.

Officers have started an important procurement process to appoint a main contractor to design and build the future project, and to deliver this significant investment for the benefit of local communities. The conclusion of this process and the final contract award are expected to take place during 2027.

Once this has been completed, the Council proposes to appoint a contractor to develop the scheme’s detailed design. Subject to the contractor’s proposals, this phase could include the first activity taking place on the ground, with advanced works supporting the design phase.

Thanks to residents in for attending our recent public event, to find out more about the flood alleviation work that is ongoing at Cardiff Road and Maes-y-Ffynon Lane.

Around 25 people dropped into the Sobell Leisure Centre in Aberdare, to speak with officers and the contractor about the scheme that will significantly increase the local drainage network capacity over the year ahead.

Residents are advised that a dedicated webpage for the scheme is in the process of being updated – once this is completed, we’ll issue a further update.

The Welsh Government-funded scheme will include creating a pond area to store rainwater, as well as the installation of new drainage infrastructure. It will provide protection for 56 properties. Further details are included in our previous news item: https://orlo.uk/gyQCw

Since the scheme started in July 2026, contractor Centregreat Ltd has made steady progress. The main drainage run is largely installed and construction of the attenuation pond is underway. Japanese knotweed treatment is also ongoing, and is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Thanks to the community for your continued cooperation as this important local scheme is delivered.
