Supporting mental health and encouraging inclusion is at the core of our archaeology field school.

Our excavations are a place not only to develop new skills in archaeology, but also to benefit your mental health through the process of archaeology, experiencing this fantastic location, and being part of a supportive and welcoming team.

If you are struggling with your mental health, looking to meet new people and develop new skills, why not join us this summer?

This year we will have Helena Venables, a dedicated trained counsellor who runs Cambrian Counselling, providing support for all participants. Helena will be running a number of drop in sessions throughout each week, if you fancy a chat, and will be on hand to support you if you feel you are struggling at any time and need some help. In addition, a number of our staff our mental health first aid trained and will always be on hand to support.

This is open to all participants, and we encourage everyone to use this service.

Dafydd Johnston is an internationally recognised scholar of medieval texts written in the Welsh language, including the definitive work on the period’s most famous and accomplished poet, Dafydd ap Gwilym who is closely associated with the abbey of Strata Florida.

Almost from its inception, and throughout the Middle Ages, the abbey, alongside other Cistercian houses in Pura Wallia, seems to have been engaged in the production and transmission of manuscripts which inscribed the poetic traditions of early Welsh literary culture.

This book gives an account of that enterprise, exploring what we know of the authors, offering outstanding examples of their work and placing them in their cultural and political milieu. This account also describes how this vital tradition was maintained through the succeeding centuries of the modern era with national as well as local poets continuing to produce new works, in both the English and Welsh languages. This spiritual place, an icon of Welsh cultural identity, still captures the imagination and inspires new poetry.

At the celebratory launch of the new Pilgrim sculpture at Strata Florida on 29 October 2022 there were a number of items of merchandise on sale. These are still available. In particular, there are limited editions of A4 size prints of the Pilgrim either framed or as mounts, signed by the artist, Glenn Morris, who created the sculpture. The photo features Glenn and the Pilgrim on the day that the sculpture was completed.
