🚦 **SPORTSFIELD ROAD LEVEL CROSSING – UPDATE** 🚦
We’ve received a further update from **Network Rail** regarding the ongoing closure of the Sportsfield Road level crossing.
Unfortunately, the crossing will need to **remain closed for the time being** while the final design arrangements for the upgrade are completed. However, importantly, **the project remains on track and progress is being made.**
The key points are:
* 🚧 The upgraded crossing will be **relocated by approximately 40 metres** because of existing signalling and power equipment.
* 📍 Network Rail has applied to **divert the Public Right of Way** to meet the new crossing location. Wakefield Council has agreed in principle that the project can progress while the formal legal process continues, helping to avoid unnecessary delays.
* 🅿️ A potential **parking area** is also being explored, which could reduce the need for some people to cross the railway. The land belongs to the local rugby club, so discussions are ongoing.
* 📹 The new crossing will include **CCTV and a Miniature Stop Light (MSL) system**, with both being installed as part of the same programme to avoid further disruption later.
* đźš‚ Once the work is complete, Network Rail intends to hold a **community railway-safety event**, with the nearby cricket club and Grand Central already expressing an interest in supporting it.
We appreciate that the continued closure is inconvenient, particularly for people who regularly use this route. However, it is encouraging that the scheme is progressing and that Network Rail, Wakefield Council, train operators and other local organisations are working together on a safer long-term solution.
We’ll continue to raise residents’ concerns and **share further updates as we receive them.** 💙
