This years LABC South West annual conference is now underway in Torquay. A packed house and a packed agenda. We are covering Part L Tata Group, the National Fire Chiefs Council speaking on operational firefighting and its link to design, Part O and overheating by , the Building Safety Act , LABC Warranty on common defects all being covered today.

We would like to wish all of our customers and partners a very happy Christmas. Thank you for your custom this year in a time of change and challenge for us all in the construction industry. Our team has also undergone substantial transformation with some excellent new additions, internal changes and we are pleased to say we now have a full complement of staff.
At present we are working very hard towards the The BSCF competency validation accreditation for all surveyors with the first cohort having sat the assessment at the beginning of December and the next wave gearing up for just after the Christmas break. We will also be holding an event early in the new year to update customers on changes to the Building Act, regulations, our responsibilities as designers, regulators and contractors as well as the direction industry is taking us with the Building Safety Act changes coming into effect on 1st April 2024.

Further opportunities have arisen for trainee surveyors to join the LABC building control team as this discipline continues to expand its resources.

The LABC are continuing to invest and support the Local Authourty building control profession offering places for people looking to work in the construction industry whether that be at school leaving age as trainee, someone considering a career change or anything in between. At present, there are a number of opportunities locally to join the or teams.

The Local Authority Building Control profession is interesting, rewarding, vibrant and no two days are the same ….. also an opportunity to work with some fantastic people. A full structured training programme is also offered. We have been busy with recruitment over the last few months to increase capacity in the team and are delighted to announce we have some new staff members. We also have some existing surveyors taking up new roles within the team and over the next few weeks will introduce you to them.

Kristy Anderson joined us earlier this week and it taking up a position in the area surveying team.

Since graduating from university in 2020 Kristy has worked as an assistant building surveyor/ building surveyor for multi-disciplinary consultancies based in Exeter and Plymouth, gaining valuable experience assisting on projects throughout feasibility, design, construction, and maintenance stages.

Before deciding to study Building Surveying and the Environment with the University of Plymouth Kristy worked as a telephone engineer with BT Openreach, leaving to raise her two children.

Her hobbies include, furniture restoration, sea swimming, paddle boarding, exploring Cornwall at the weekends with her family, travelling and watching her daughter play football.

We are delighted to have Kristy join us on a full time and permanent basis.
