There's an election for a seat on the promenade ward for Penzance Council, and three candidates are standing: Rob Trewhella (Independent), Duncan Paul (Lib Dem) and Mayar Akash (Independent).
At AFFPZ, we've always supported independent candidates who put the town, before party, first.
What we don't like is people standing as independent when they belong to a political party, using the 'independant' tag to get votes they wouldn't usually get.
So we're very disappointed that Rob Trewhella, an active member of Reform, has chosen not to stand by his colours and dupe the Penzance electorate.
Rob is being promoted by Reform and has got a whole load of Reform party supporters to deliver leaflets for him (more info here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/reformuk.stives)
Please be aware of this when voting on November 6.
As they say; birds of a feather, flock together.

We’ve woken up to a new dawn for Cornwall Council as the hapless Tories are swept aside.

The outgoing Conservative administration wasn’t a good one. They seemed to stagger from one crisis to the next. Perhaps it was their underhand attempt to merge Cornwall Council with the councils of Plymouth, Torbay, Exeter that did them in? Then there was a the mayor for Cornwall fiasco, then trying to sell Newquay Airport to an America hedge fund asset stripper – we’ll stop now, we’ll be here all day listing their lash-ups.

So, we’re back to no overall control and it’s up to the Lib Dems to save us from the Reform loons.Thing is though, the Lib Dems are often loonier than Reform and so they would sit rather well together.

The Lib Dems threw considerable resources at this election, and it’s paid off. The sheer amount of literature, calling and online canvassing was staggering – it shows that having a party to pay and organise your campaigning can buy votes.

Lib Dem administrations have not been good for Cornwall. With an election coming up in 2013, the Lib Dems in charge at Cornwall Council froze the council tax – and got re-elected. Although it saved a few pennies for taxpayers, it was a foolish decision and Cornwall Council – once with a healthy balance – has been in debt ever since.

That £1.3 billion debt that Cornwall now has is a direct result of Lib Dems wanting to stay in power – whatever the cost.

You see, that’s the thing with Lib Dems – you never really know what they stand for. Hearing some of their councillors waffle and dither at meetings, I don’t think they know what they stand for either. It’s also telling that so many of the new Lib Dem intake are totally inexperienced at local authority management. We’re about to be governed by people who don’t know what to do or what they stand for.

Yet when we talk about inexperience and incompetence, the worse is yet to come. The Reform rabble will dissolve when it actually comes to doing any work, and shrink further when it comes to any common sense. One candidate’s main quest was to ban speed limits in towns. If you’re hit by a car at 30mph, you have a 90% chance of being killed opposed to a 50% chance of survival being hit at 20mph. It’s like a s**t remake of Death Race 2000, except that’s already happened.

Free NHS dentists for all, raising the tax threshold to £20k, less tax for large businesses - it’s like Liz Tuss all over again; the books won’t balance. Going by Reform’s past record of bankrupting local administrations, you wouldn’t let this lot in charge of your kid’s pocket money, let alone a multi-billion pound local authority.

We predict a coalition of Lib Dems, Independents, Mebyon Kernow and Greens to take over – rightfully keeping the Labour party out in the cold. Decisions will be harder to make, but at least they’ll keep each other in check.

There is a bright light though, West Cornwall is safe from Reform. Maybe they picked the wrong people, perhaps we’re more liberal down west or is it because we’re just a bit more wise and level headed?

Either way, it’s a very interesting time in politics right now…

Going to be interesting times up at County Hall whilst they sort out a coalition of the willing from that lot. To take control of the council, a group needs to hold 44 of the 87 seats.

Reform - 28
Lib Dems - 26
Indies - 16
Conservatives - 7
Labour - 4
Greens - 3
Mebyon Kernow - 3

Can't show results as Cornwall Council website has crashed, maybe the new administration can sort this out as well.

We sometimes get called 'lefty' on this Facebook group and the truth is we don't adhere to any political movement or party - we want what's best for Penzance. If you stand for a political party at a local level, you are a traitor as the party agenda always comes first. You can't be a true local councillor when your actions are dictated by an English political party (Mebyon Kernow excluded, as it is a Cornish party).
The Labour Party, locally and nationally, does not support Cornish identity. A Labour councillor on Penzance council in a debate mocked the Cornish identity asking 'what does being Cornish even mean?'. Another Labour councillor, during a discussion on having the Penzance coat of arms motto Quod Improbum Terret Probo Prodest in the Cornish language, rather than Latin, pulled a silly face and said 'urgh, Cornish'. The motto in Cornish would read Tebeldra A Eutheg Tra Vas A Wober, in English it says For the Reward of the Good and The Dread and Terror of the Bad - so now you know.
In 2014, the Cornish were finally recognised as a national minority under the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities. This meant the Cornish are recognised in the same way as the Scots, Welsh and Irish.
This recognition only came about when Labour had left government as Labour had refused to allow the Cornish to apply for the status.

At the local hustings held at The Lugger this week, where local Cornwall Council candidates address the public and set out how they plan to help the community, not one candidate from the Reform party bothered to attend.
Missing from the chance to meet the electorate were Giane Mortimer, Heamoor; Paul Nicholson, Penzance Promenade; Adrian C***s, Penzance East; and Nigel Bennett, Newyn (we couldn't find any election material for Nigel, so had to use a puppet for his picture).
What message does this send?

There's only one election taking place for Penzance Council where nine candidates are running for six seats.

The three other wards are uncontested, all candidates standing in those wards are elected. Vacancies for the seats below will be filled by co-option.

Newlyn and Mousehole ward: 2 vacancies
Heamoor and Gulval ward: 1 vacancy
Penzance Promenade ward: 1 vacancy

For the Penzance East ward and for a better future for Penzance, we would like to see the following elected:

Duncan Paul
Jan Power
Jane Pugh
Nadine Tonner
Mark Wilson
Andy Law

For anyone with an interest in the forthcoming local elections, they will notice that there are no A Future For Penzance candidates on the nomination papers.

A Future For Penzance was formed in 2010, to support the £64m investment for a ferry terminal in Penzance, and new Scillionian vessel, and to counter the misinformation being peddled at the time.

Although that battle was lost, and Penzance as a whole lost, the team behind A Future For Penzance galvanised their support and put candidates forward for election on Penzance Council and Cornwall Council in 2013 – candidates that would put Penzance first by accepting investment and promoting progress and change.

Fiercely independent and free of party politic restraints, A Future For Penzance has supported more that 25 candidates for election and, at one time, having almost a third of the councillors on Penzance Council on its side.

Since being part of the council, A Future For Penzance has backed and enabled projects such as the resurfacing of Penzance Promenade; keeping six public toilets open in the town; the renewal of Alexandra tennis courts, Alexandra play park and Wherrytown play park; floodlights for Penzance skate park; anti-social behaviour officers and town centre wardens; extra policing in the parish; the regeneration of Coinagehall Street / St Anthony’s Gardens; Pixel, Causewayhead – and countless other projects that would not have happened without the support of A Future For Penzance.

A Future For Penzance will still campaign for progress in Penzance and keep calling out for change, and may well put candidates forward in future elections. Yet for 2025, we’re taking a bit of time out.

Thank you for all your support over the past 15 years.
