A motion calling for Cornwall Council’s public realm w**d treatment proposals to be reconsidered was strongly supported at a meeting of the full Council today.

22/04/2026

We understand that people have very strong feelings about our public realm proposals.

Members have expressed clear concerns, and we have also heard the strength of feeling reflected in the public questions raised today, including about the way these plans were communicated to town and parish councils.

We accept that the process was not good enough, and we recognise the need for a clearer timetable.

Our responsibility is to keep Cornwall’s streets, footpaths and kerbsides safe, accessible and well maintained. But we also recognise that this must be done in a way that earns the confidence of members, town and parish councils and the wider public.

We’ll now carefully consider the points raised both in the motion and during the debate - including opt-out arrangements, and how any next steps are communicated.

In the meantime, we will continue with manual w**d control as far as possible.

Cornwall Council has recently announced the reintroduction of glyphosate for w**d control along roads and kerbs, after largely discontinuing its use in 2016.
Town and Parish Councils were initially given until 20 April to decide whether to opt in or opt out of glyphosate spraying in their areas by Cornwall Council. Choosing to opt out means taking on responsibility for managing w**ds locally.
At its Full Council Meeting on 13 April, Penryn Town Council voted to opt out of Cornwall Council's proposal due to glyphosate use. We now have until 20 May to submit an alternative w**d management plan to Cornwall Council.
We are proposing a targeted, pesticide-free w**d management plan supported by a team of volunteers. Community involvement will be essential to making this approach work.
We know that many residents feel strongly about this issue, and we need your help. If you can spare an hour or two a week, twice a year, please come along to our meeting:
🗓 Wednesday 22 April
🕖 7:00pm
📍 The Parlour, Penryn Methodist Chapel, The Terrace, Penryn TR10 8EH

Pesticide Free Penryn will be attending to help discuss practical, non-glyphosate approaches to w**d management.
If you can’t attend but would still like to get involved, please email [email protected]

🌍 World Heritage Day 🏛️

Today we’re celebrating the rich history and heritage right here in Penryn, Cornwall 💙

Did you know…
⚓ Penryn is one of the oldest towns in Cornwall, with its first recorded charter dating back to 1236
🛶 Its name comes from the Cornish “Pen-ryn”, meaning “head of the creek”, perfectly describing its position on the River Fal
🏗️ The town was once a thriving port, playing a key role in trade and shipbuilding for centuries
🪨 Penryn is famous for its granite, which was exported all over the world and used in iconic buildings, including parts of London
🏫 The historic streets you see today still reflect its medieval layout, making it one of the most characterful towns in the area

Penryn is also part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognising the area’s global importance during the mining boom ⛏️

Today is a great opportunity to take a stroll, explore our historic streets, and appreciate the stories that have shaped our community over hundreds of years.

💚 Let’s celebrate and protect our local heritage for future generations!
