PLP MONDAY CATCH-UP:

Joanne reported 2 bags that she collected earlier today...

And thank you, Gill Hughes, for sending this in a recent email:

We live in Higham. We have been litter picking - only odd bags. Padiham Greenway on Friday afternoon (someone had got to Boyes bin before we did), Porkies van area a week ago, and we started into Barrowford at the car park by the canal yesterday.

I have figured out that you must collect nitrous oxide containers and get them collected by a waste disposal firm but what do you do with vapes? Also do you report evidence of nitrous oxide abuse to the police?

DC: Great to hear of your litter picking in Higham and Padiham! Yes, our nitrous oxide canisters get collected by King of scrap and waste when we get a hundred or so. We don't report NOS abuse, because they just get dumped all over the place by unknowns.

My Cooke family came from Higham. They ran the Four Alls pub for quite some time. My Grandfather, Robert Hartley Cooke, was Parish Clerk of Higham for 26 years. He was also a butcher and had a small shop adjoining the pub, next to the famous trough and spout. He was a member of the spoof 'Higham Balloon Juice Company'. A kind of Monty Python of the 1940s! More about that in a future 'Picker' magazine...

DC has been in the Yorkshire Dales, with his family today, with no litter to report! (see separate post earlier).

Did I miss anyone? If so, rebuke me in the comments below!

Pic below: Pip (six-year-old Jack-Chi) has returned from her 3-month holiday in Norfolk, and will be seen in and around town 'litter pipping' with DC soon!

IZZI AND ELIJAH ON TOUR: AINSDALE BEACH, SOUTHPORT...

Google: Rare habitats, prestigious leisure activities and family-friendly facilities...

Ainsdale-on-Sea sits on the southern edge of Southport and boasts expansive areas of beach and sand dune systems. It is a visitor favourite for family days out, with many a sandcastle built during the summer months!

Ainsdale beach is now recognised as one of the premier beaches in the UK for extreme kite activities, with zones set aside for kite buggy and landboard use and kitesurfing taking place on the sea. A permit is required before you use a power kite in the kite zone.

And it has been awarded International Blue Flag on a number of occasions. The QCA award tells visitors that the standards of beach management are of the highest quality in the UK.

The range of dune habitats and rare species found along the Sefton coast is unique and protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

DC & Pip collected 1 bag today
So did daughter Rachel Langolf
David Bowers & Tig did too...

DID I MISS ANYONE? If so, please alert me below!

So 3 bags today, making 202 in total for May, as we now enter June...
2026 TOTAL = 1289

PADIHAM LITTER PICKERS - WORKING HARD FOR A CLEANER BEACH AND A TIDIER DUNE!

Thank you once more, Izzi, for your super pics!

TWICE AS BAD ON DOUBLE ROW:

Why don't the authorities care about Padiham's heritage? These 'cobbled' streets had their setts put down in Victorian times, when they were evidently looked after better than they are today!

Once I've completed the clean-up on Mill Street, I will begin to tackle Double Row, another street in the heart of our conservation area, would you believe? The neglect of our historic streets is unbelievable in this day and age. All these stones were washed down when there was a major water leak at the top of this street, two years ago, where it joins West Street.

No proper clean-up operation after the delayed repair was undertaken at the time, and this street hasn't been touched since. The neglect shown is astonishing. Shame on the authorities responsible, and the indifference shown by our local councillors!

THANK YOU TO JACINTA, WHO VERY KINDLY DONATED £20 TO PADIHAM LITTER PICKERS TODAY WHEN SHE CAME ACROSS ME ON HARGROVE AVENUE.

She's moving to Padiham from Sabden soon, and she will be living in the same house that my Great-Grandfather, John Robert Crossley, lived in in 1891, when he was just 11 years old. John and his wife Bertha, feature in the latest issue of our 'Picker' magazine. Bertha had 21 children, with only 8 known to have survived to adulthood. Pick up a Picker to find out more!

Great to welcome John, who grabbed some of our gear and who will be solo litter picking shortly...

Today I was weed-wacking on Hargrove Avenue, while the pickers were picking. Fortunately, for some of the time, I was in the shade...
