Home-Start Runnymede & Woking

Home-Start Runnymede & Woking We are a local charity who provide emotional and practical support to parents with children under 5.

News, information, comment, appeals and much much more to share and raise awareness of the work of Home-Start Runnymede & Woking (RAW). We cover the Woking and Runnymede boroughs of Surrey offering support, friendship and practical help to families with at least 1 child under 5 who are finding life a bit tough. We try to give these families a helping hand through weekly volunteer visits of 2-3 hou

rs, which can make all the difference to them. Home visiting volunteers are recruited and offered full training and preparation before being matched to a family. It is SO rewarding to feel you are making a difference when it really matters

Our volunteers are central to everything we do to support local families facing challenging times. Without them, Home-Start could not have the impact that it does.

This Volunteers’ Week we want to say an extra thank you to our amazing team of volunteers.

Home-Start UK recently commissioned a survey about loneliness.

The results reflect what we see across Runnymede & Woking.

- More than one in five parents rarely or never have meaningful contact with another adult outside their household – this has risen since a similar poll in 2024
- Nearly half (49%) of all parents surveyed who feel lonely or isolated said they are concerned that their loneliness is impacting on their children’s happiness,
- 44% are concerned that their loneliness is affecting their children’s development.

As Surrey County Council moves to become West and East Surrey, we call upon the new leaders to make this a priority- improving connection and reducing isolation for parents of young children .

Free New Dad Workshop facilitated by Dad Matters Surrey!

Calling all dads-to-be and new dads with babies under 12 weeks old. We’re excited to be working with Dad Matters Surrey to offer a FREE New Dad Workshop, designed to support you through the early days of parenthood.

This relaxed and supportive session will cover:
🟠 Bonding and attachment
🟠 Mum’s & dad’s mental health and wellbeing
🟠 Coping with a crying baby
🟠 Supporting your partner
🟠 Where to go for help, advice, and support

Whether this is your first baby or you’re just looking for reassurance, this workshop is a safe space to ask questions, build confidence, and connect with other dads.

The workshop will run every other month and alternate between in-person and online sessions.

Free to attend for Royal Surrey Dads. Booking via the Maternity Parent Portal.

*For the purposes of this workshop (due to specific funding) “dad” means anyone taking on a fathering role – including grandfathers, adoptive dads, trans men, and trans-masculine parents. This session is not for pregnant women/people or female partners/co-parents. We’re committed to inclusivity and are developing more resources to support same-sex and diverse families.

Dad Matters has been featured in magazine!

spoke to them about the support we offer new fathers who are struggling. Research is showing fathers may get postpartum depression at a similar rate to mothers, but it’s often overlooked.

So if you know a new dad, reach out to them, check in on how they’re doing - just a simple “How are you sleeping?” “How was the birth for you?” can open up space for them to share.

If you’re a new dad and struggling, you’re not alone - please reach out to family, friends or to us at Dad Matters Surrey, we’ll be glad you did 💙

For Elizabeth and James, having a family has been shaped by moments of deep loss, new beginnings, and the everyday chaos of parenting young children. With Home-Start’s support, they’ve found practical help, friendship, confidence and a safe place.
