Yesterday, cadets and staff from 173 (Orpington) Squadron proudly took part in the Orpington Remembrance Parade.

We joined our community to honour the service and sacrifice of all those who gave their lives for our freedom.

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

Last night, 173 Squadron said goodbye to FS Young, a steadfast presence through every mission, challenge, and triumph. From cadet to staff, he has been a guiding force across a number of years, shaping the squadron with strength, commitment, and enduring leadership. His sharp wit and unwavering support have left a lasting impression on everyone who served alongside him. The squadron feels different without him and always will. Thank you, FS Young, for everything.

Up in the skies on Day 3! CWO Patel is making the most of his RAFAC Gliding Scholarship — a unique chance for cadets to learn how to pilot a glider solo. We wish him the best of luck.

Stand To!

It’s been a week since Kent Wing’s inaugural Bronze fieldcraft - and it’s safe to say the cadets have only just recovered. The weekend, which consisted of lessons in the duties of a sentry, reaction to fire control orders, and methods of movement, was an intense training opportunity for our cadets - and also introduced them to training with blank ammunition.

NOTE: All training conducted with weapons system was conducted by suitably trained and tested cadets and CFAVs, who have followed a recognised and endorsed progressive training syllabus. All training was conducted within the MODs safe system of training.

Did someone say barbecue?🔥 173 Squadron turned up the heat this Thursday to celebrate Flt Lt Simon’s birthday with an unforgettable evening! From sizzling BBQ bites to a fierce tug of war showdown, the energy was sky-high. And let’s not forget the legendary NCO One Bounce competition—plenty of laughs, close calls, and top-tier enjoyment. A great way to bring the squadron together

🎯 Bullseye! Under the sharp leadership of Sgt Simons, the 173 competition team hit their mark—literally. Putting their archery skills to the test, the team showcased incredible focus, precision, and discipline. Each arrow was a reminder that excellence comes from training, teamwork, and staying locked in on the target. Aim true, shoot straight, and keep pushing limits!

What have you done this weekend? Cadets from around Sector 1, Kent Wing have been packing bags, cooking food, and learning the fundamentals of fieldcraft in order to achieve their Blue Fieldcraft certificate.

The weekend also gave some of the wing’s newest FTI(R) instructors a chance to exercise their qualification, and pass on their knowledge.
