Tomb of the Eagles

Tomb of the Eagles Open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 starting Wednesday 1 April 2026. Roughly half a mile inland from the tomb is a Bronze Age site.

Perched above the dramatic South Ronaldsay cliffs, the Isbister Chambered Cairn - better known today as the ‘Tomb of the Eagles’ - is one of Orkney’s top archaeological sites. Discovered by chance by local farmer Ronnie Simison in the 1950s, the Stone Age tomb revealed an amazing collection of bones and artefacts, placed here some 5,000 years ago. It comprises a mound of burnt stone and the remain

s of a stone building, named after the ‘Liddle’ farm where Ronnie uncovered them. Excavations at the site have led to important discoveries about how people lived and worked in Orkney 3,000 years ago. More than 50 years after Ronnie Simison came across these remarkable sites, his family invite you to come and enjoy these well-loved visitor attractions. Enjoy a unique ‘hands-on’ experience at the Visitor Centre, where you can see, and enjoy the privilege of handling some of the original artefacts found at the sites. During the main visitor season, fascinating displays and daily talks offer insights into the lives of these Stone Age and Bronze Age people. Explore some of the questions which remain unanswered. The Gift Shop offers a wide range of items, including many local crafts, books, hot and cold drinks and Orkney ice cream. There is a stunning walk from the Visitor Centre to the tomb, via the Bronze Age site - approximately 1 mile along a well-marked path. The maritime heath and grassland is alive in the summer with birds and wild flowers.

Thank you Ruth and Colin!

Not all of our volunteers are meeting and greeting our visitors, we are very privileged to have volunteers that help "behind the scenes".

Ruth, who also is on our front desk welcoming visitors, can be seen here post-stock take (yes we counted all those sugar sachets), and Colin helps with lots of maintenance around the site including the conservation of the archaeology.

Ruth and Colin give incredible support to the site and this is just a snippet of the help they give! Both are on our sub-committee for TotE which is also made up of people volunteering their time to make sure this site grows and thrives.

Hello Wanda!

Next up, here's our fab volunteer Wanda, who always gives such a wonderful sunny warm welcome to our visitors!

We asked Wanda why she volunteers at TotE and why she enjoys it:

"It's really positive place to be, and it's easy to get support from the team. It's also such a fabulous place, we are honouring something that one man and his family started. It's easy to sit on our own at home and get stuck on your ways, but volunteering gets me out of the house and it's great to meet so many people"

Some of our volunteers had a special visit to the Orkney Museum yesterday, to look at some of the original artefacts from the site.

The trip was arranged as a small thank you to our volunteer team for everything they do, and a great afternoon was had by all.

Thank you to Siobhan and the Orkney Museum for having us!

Meet Mike, one of our fab volunteers who helps us every week!

We asked Mike why he has chosen to volunteer at Tomb of the Eagles, and this is what he said:

"I volunteer because Tomb of the Eagles is an internationally important site, and it cannot be run properly without volunteers, and it's so important to keep somewhere like this open for the general public. I really enjoy doing it and helping the site to be open"

As Mike mentioned, we couldn't operate without the help of our volunteers. If you'd like to be part of a great team that shares the stories of this amazing site, visit https://www.vaorkney.org.uk/volunteering/i-want-to-volunteer/volunteering-opportunities/vo104813 or email [email protected]

This week is Volunteers Week 2026!

Volunteers Week is an opportunity to shine a light on our incredible volunteers and highlight the incredibly important part they play in keeping our site open and running. We simply could not do what we do without the support from our volunteers.

This week you will be getting to know a few of our volunteers, starting with Moira and Jean! Both Moira and Jean enjoy meeting and greeting our guests, as well as more recently brightening up the visitor centre by bringing along some potted plants and flower displays.

When asked what they enjoyed most about volunteering,

Moira said: "I enjoy being part of such a good team, and it's lovely to speak to folk coming in especially people who remembered past days of visiting with Ronnie and Morgan."

Jean added: "I have enjoyed meeting people and seeing visitors enjoy the attraction. I am proud of the achievement of seeing the site reopen and being part of it all. People remember the history of this place and I enjoy talking to them about it"

We will be hearing from more of our volunteers throughout the week!

One of our beautiful painted stones is missing! 😞

Our lovely seal stone is missing from its home along our painted stone trail, and we are making a call out for it to make it's return home! We think it might have gone missing on Thursday or Friday.

These stones were very kindly donated to us and lots of hard work went in to making them, and so far lots of children have enjoyed taking our painted stone trail.

We would love to see it back where it belongs - no questions asked.

THANK YOU!

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone for coming to our Welcome Day yesterday. It was amazing to see SO MANY of you!

Thank you to our volunteers, SRBDT, Kathleen and Freda and the whole Simison family, local businesses, our archaeology friends, various supporters in the community that helped to lend items or their time and my two rangers for all pulling together and helping to make this an incredible day for all. Even the weather mucked in and the sun came out for a little while!

Feeling very privileged to be part of this incredible team and to support with looking after this wonderful site.

Thanks again,

Cat, Heritage Manager
