We were both pleased to be able to represent the strong views of our residents by supporting this motion. One of Reform's main promises if they got elected was to fix the roads. Instead the roads are getting much much worse but Reform are cutting the funding. They need to stop pretending that they have increased funding and actually deliver on what they promised or move over for someone that will.
In contrast, as Broxtowe Alliance councillors we promised to invest in council services, to build social housing, and protect the environment. Our Broxtowe budget tonight did just that and we will continue to do so.
Since I became a councillor the number one complaint I have received is about the state of the roads. And they're right. The state of our roads is a disgrace and it just keeps getting worse. I doubt that there is a single road in my Beeston Central ward that isn't riddled with potholes, or even in Broxtowe. The roads are a disgrace and the pavements too.
That's why I was shocked when I read the budget approved by Nottinghamshire County Council last week and saw that Reform have CUT funding to road maintenance for 2026/27 compared to the previous year. This is despite the fact that they have INCREASED the overall revenue budget on the County Council budget by over 30%, from £668million to £880million. And despite the fact that they have increased Council tax by 3.99%, which is an increase of £75 for the average property. That's around 15x MORE than Broxtowe's increase of around £5 for an equivalent home. Despite their promises to cut taxes and fix the roads, this budget shows the truth.
That's why I proposed a motion to full council at Broxtowe tonight calling upon Reform to do what they promised, and use some of that significant increase in their budget to fix the roads. As a Broxtowe Alliance councillor I want to do everything in my power to help the residents of my Beeston central ward and the people of Broxtowe and I am delighted that my motion was unanimously supported. The county council needs to step up, fix the crisis with our roads, and keep people safe.
