This is a 1988 Volvo B230 engine, this engine is out of our Volvo 760 for a complete refurbish and 'where possible' efficiency improvement, our goal is to make use of the large cylinder bore and small stroke design which results in less internal stress. With that being taken into account this engine is capable of operating at high RPM for long periods of time without any accelerated wear that would occur in a engine with a larger stroke.
One main issue that comes with more power is heat, all piping that runs close to any heat source has been covered and protected, the choice to use a thin 0W-20 oil has been chosen to help disperse the heat from the bearings and assist the oil cooler through convection much more efficiently.
A crankshaft scraper has been installed to reduce oil drag on the crankshaft that can occur at high RPM and free any power related to such drag, we decided to send the cylinder head away for a skim and a port and polish of the inlet manifold and combustion chamber.
ARP head studs and threads were installed to give a much more uniform and higher tolerable clamping force, but The decision to use a standard head gasket was made to retain the original compression ratio as the boost pressure was to be increased, with this being the case the risk of detonation was lessened because of the large thickness of the standard head gasket.
The crankshaft that was used was a ZRP crankshaft that is manufactured from aerospace grade 4340 solid billet steel, weighing in at 18kg This crankshaft is fully balanced to 1gr.cm /- 0.1 and offering four times the amount of strength of that of a standard iron crankshaft, with the crankshaft up rated it seemed only fair to install a set of H beam con rods to deal with the extra load that comes from the high boost and continuous high RPM.
This engine is expected to see a respectable 320bhp at 20psi of boost, the limiting factor in this build is with the turbo charger being within the period of the cars original date of manufacture, with a modern higher flowing turbo a final power of 500bhp could be achieved quite easily.
As a personal note this is the most detailed and thought out engine build i have ever worked on, and will surely set the benchmark for future modification builds to come.
