‘Second,
the basic touchstone of the method is your own bodily experience of something opening up in you.
An interpretation is sure if, and only if, you have a breakthrough, a physical felt shift.
Let me tell you immediately, on the first page of the book, what this touchstone is:
As an example, suppose you have forgotten one of the things you were supposed to do today. You know there was something, but not what it was. You have an odd, unclear sense (we call it a felt sense) of this forgotten task. You try out various ideas, such as, “It must have been something about work,” or “Maybe it was that thing Jeannie wanted me to do.”
These are good ideas. They are things you need to do. But if that unclear sense doesn’t budge, you know you have not remembered the forgotten task. When at last you do remember, there is a physically felt relief, as it all floods back. Whew!!! You remember not only what you were going to do, but also why, where, with whom, and what you feel about it.
By then if someone asked you, “How do you know this is what you forgot?” (and not “something about work” and not “Jeannie’s thing”), you would laugh. In your body the feeling is unmistakable. You have remembered.”
