On the eve of the election, Newcastle Liberal Democrats are sending an important message ahead of what are expected be momentous local elections with huge significance for Newcastle City Council, where fifteen years of Labour control are set to end in a heavy citywide defeat.
Lib Dem leader of the Opposition Cllr Colin Ferguson said:
"Throughout this campaign Liberal Democrat candidates and campaigners have been engaging voters on the doorsteps across the city to persuade them that the Lib Dems are offering Newcastle a repair plan for a broken city council and a route map toward its recovery and reconnection with the public. We know that the voters are acknowledging that our priorities are sound and that we are offering a principled agenda for positive change.
Our values are clear. We want a city that every resident can be proud of, and a council that is responsive and customer focused. We want to restore the faith of citizens that the council works for their interests, not its own interests. We have set out our priorities for more council housing citywide, for increased investment in road and pavement maintenance, and for better managed parks and play areas. We have a record of delivering improvement for the city before and we are ready to do so again.
It is clear that the current Labour administration will not be in power after this weekend. The choice facing Newcastle voters tomorrow is a council polarised between the populist extremes offered by Reform and the Greens, with uncertain and unsettling glimpses of what lies behind their masks, or a council led by Lib Dem councillors who will prioritise local communities, customer service, sound council finances, and a competently run council that delivers responsive and efficient local services.
My colleagues and I stand ready to work with anyone who cares about Newcastle's best interests to achieve a prosperous city with opportunity for all its residents and all its neighbourhoods.. We are ready to lead the council to achieve that vision in partnership with its major institutions, businesses large and small and city stakeholders, to liberate the potential of all Newcastle's citizens and communities and to re-energise the city's economy.
It is clear that Labour's time is up. There will be very few Labour councillors left on the new council . But it is far less clear that a council dominated by newly-elected Reform or the Greens can command the confidence of the city as a whole. They will be untested and they risk leading the city into an unsettling future,
We ask Newcastle voters who are deservedly disillusioned with Labour to put their trust in us on Thursday to lead the new council. We are clear sighted about the task ahead and the challenges the city faces. We have a proven record of running the council effectively in the past, and Thursday offers a golden opportunity for the Lib Dems to do so again.
We ask Newcastle's voters to put their trust in us to work for you and with you towards a better future for our great city."
