Hudson Road Primary is one of 23 schools across Sunderland and Northumberland that have been fitted with energy saving solar panels, funded through the Mayor’s Renewables Fund, and powered by £700,000 from GB Energy.

The Sunderland primary school is already seeing the benefits, with solar panels now generating green, locally produced energy on site, cutting their energy bills by approximately £4,000 annually.

The children from the school told the Mayor and Sunderland City Council Leader Cllr Eynon that they want to spend money saved on more arts and craft materials, opportunities for reading, and toys like hula hoops for playtime.

Season finale, Tonight at 9pm

Channel 5’s The Fortune, is about a woman who is left a huge inheritance by a man she’s never met. But it also tells a story of the North East’s growing screen industry.

Produced by Byker-based, Lonesome Pine, and filmed across 21 locations across the North East of England including Teesside, it provided work for 48 local suppliers, and experience for local people with 63% of the production crew from the region.

The North East screen industry is growing, and we’re making sure that means more jobs for local people.

With support from the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund, BRIC: Blyth Resource & Initiative Centre is helping people across south east Northumberland build skills, boost confidence and move closer to employment. From English and maths courses to digital skills and one-to-one support, it’s a true one‑stop shop for people who need it most.

Local residents are gaining qualifications, growing in confidence and opening up new opportunities for themselves and their families – often after facing real challenges.

At a time when the cost of living is still hitting hard, this kind of support matters more than ever. Helping people into work, improving skills and connecting them to wider support – from benefits advice to energy and housing – puts more stability into people’s lives and more opportunity into our communities.

This is exactly what the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund is about: backing trusted organisations on the ground who know their communities and deliver real, practical change.

Proud to support BRIC and the difference they’re making in Blyth and beyond.
