South Middlesbrough's Environmental Enforcement Team has been taking action against fly-tipping in Hemlington, with investigations leading to successful prosecutions and significant fines for offenders.
In November 2025, the Council's Fly-tipping Squad removed three black bags of household waste dumped near the subway on Aviemore Road. Following investigations, an individual from Burghley Court, Hemlington was identified and later found guilty of twice failing to attend formal interviews. They were fined £850 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £340, along with clean-up and court costs of £384.50, bringing the total penalty to £1,574.50.
The team continued to monitor the area and, in March 2026, investigated a further incident involving 11 bags of household waste dumped at the same location. The Burghley Court individual was again identified as the likely perpetrator. Following further failures to attend formal interviews, the case was heard at Teesside Magistrates' Court on 25 August 2026 in their absence.
In a separate case, heard by Teesside Magistrates' Court in July 2026, an individual from Beckenham Gardens, Hemlington was identified as responsible for fly-tipping on Aviemore Road, including bags of household waste, a broken door and a duvet. The individual was found guilty of littering in their absence and fined £220, with an £88 victim surcharge and costs of £563.50, bringing the total penalty to £871.50.
These cases highlight the ongoing work of the South Middlesbrough Environmental Enforcement Team in investigating environmental crime, holding offenders accountable and helping to keep Hemlington clean and safe for local residents.
