Maryport Community Pool

Maryport Community Pool Netherhall Pool was closed in October 2018 due to refurbishment and pool plant repair costs. A 25 year lease is being sought

A community meeting was held and subsequently a charitable organisation, led by 10 trustees is in the process of being set up.

We are extremely disappointed at Cumberland Council’s decision to renege on Allerdale Borough Council’s approved plans to build a new swimming pool in the town.

The committee secured over £16K and worked in partnership with Maryport Town Council to undertake a feasibility study and develop fully costed plans with Allerdale Borough Council. We were delighted when funding was secured from the Future High Street Fund to build a new pool at The Wave.

A pool is vital to the physical and mental wellbeing of local residents and is important in attracting tourists to the town (over 500,000 people visit each year). It allows children to learn to swim, introducing them to an accessible and healthy form of exercise and reducing the risk of accidents - we have letters of support from every school in the local area, plus over 500 people completed our survey showing their support.

We were not informed of the budget implications and we’re still yet to see the projected running costs. Significant funds have already been spent on the project - architects were appointed and we liaised on the design of the changing rooms. We want transparency.

We ask that alternative potential solutions be considered, such as energy saving measures and community ownership, and we ask that Cumberland Council live by their values when it comes to the people of Maryport: Be compassionate, Be innovative, Be empowering, Be ambitious, Be collaborative.

Gaining publicity, keep it going and show your support for the new pool.

A plea to continue with plans for new swimming pool at Maryport's Wave Centre will be heard by leading councillors at a meeting this week.

Despite in principle support for swimming at The Wave, the new Cumberland Council have deferred its approval due to concerns over increased revenue costs of heating the pool. It will now decide at the next Executive meeting on 25th April.

We have worked hard as a charity to bring swimming back to the town and funding has been secured via the Future High Streets Fund to build the pool with support from Allerdale Borough Council and Maryport Town Council.

Aspirations for a swimming pool have been widely voiced by the residents of Maryport and the proposal for The Wave will build on the existing infrastructure to bring this offer back to the town. In case you haven't heard, Maryport will get a new pool! 🎉

A huge thank you to the community for all the support we've received and to Allerdale Borough Council for including the plans into the funding bids.

We couldn't have done this without the financial support from Power to Change's Bright Ideas Fund, which enabled us to develop the feasibility and business plan and helped to get this dream into a reality, especially when we realised refurbishing the old pool at Netherhall School wasn't viable.

We hope to see the new pool open in 2024. 🏊‍♀️

MARYPORT will get is new 25 metre, four-lane swimming pool.

There’s just over a week before the survey closes. Please complete and share if you haven’t already. Much appreciated.

We have been working for 18 months to bring swimming facilities back into Maryport following the closure of Netherhall Pool.

By working closely with various stakeholders, we are pleased to confirm that Allerdale Borough Council will shortly be submitting a proposal for the reconfiguration of The Wave to include a four-lane 25 meter swimming pool.

We would like feedback from local people to help us identify how you would use the new facilities and to what extent.

It's only short and you can access the survey here: https://forms.gle/rYuPmAUdUReMCCJF8

The survey will close on Monday 13th July.

Thanks for all your help.
