🚨 The “Hang Up and Call Your Bank” Scam
Many people now know that the safest way to contact their bank is by calling 159

👉 Unfortunately, scammers are adapting — and using this advice against you

⚠️ Here’s how the “Hang Up and Call Your Bank” scam works

A criminal calls you pretending to be your bank and says things like:
“Money is being taken from your account right now — we need your password to stop it”
You refuse (which is the correct action) and then they say:
“That’s right — never share your password. Please hang up and call your bank immediately”

👉 This sounds genuine — but it is part of the scam

🧠 What’s really happening

The scammer is using social engineering to gain your trust and control what you do next.
They know:
You trust your bank
You’ve been told to call them yourself
You will feel reassured making the call yourself
They know you will immediately make that call

⚠️ Here’s the trick
Even after you “hang up”:
the scammer can keep the line open
You may even hear a fake dial or ring tone
When you dial 159 (or your banks phone number) you could still be connected to the scammer
A second scammer may answer pretending to be your bank
👉 So although you think you’ve called your bank — you haven’t

✅ How to stay safe

✔️ Safest option
Use a different phone to call your bank
(e.g. mobile instead of landline, or vice versa)

✔️ If you only have one phone
Hang up
Wait at least 30–60 seconds
Call a friend or family member first
👉 This confirms the line is properly cleared
👉 Then call 159

🚨 Warning signs
Be suspicious if the caller:
Tries to shock or scare you
Pressures you to act quickly
Talks about money being at immediate risk
Asks you to move money to a “safe account”
Tells you to stay on the phone
Tries to stop you hanging up
👉 Your bank will NEVER do these things

🟢 Key message
“HANG UP PROPERLY – THEN CALL SAFELY”

✅ Remember
159 will never call you
You only use it when you dial it
It connects you safely to your bank

✅If you are the victim of Fraud or Cybercrime

✅ Final advice
Scammers rely on panic and urgency.
👉 Take your time remain calm and stay in control

Saturday saw a slightly rearranged Big Lunch Community Litter Pick take part in St Just as part of part of a Campaign organised by Clean Cornwall & the Eden Project during National Volunteers Week & supported by St Just Town Council. Due to the adverse weather conditions & strong winds on the Saturday morning the litter pick planned between 10.00 am & 12.00 pm was rescheduled to take place between 2.00 pm & 4.00 pm when the weather was due to vastly improve as the weather front had passed through, which indeed it did as forecast with some blue sky & sunshine thrown in for good measure.
The Light refreshments organised by the Library between 12.00 pm & 1.00 pm still took place as planned but nobody apart from myself was able to attend, which was fully understandable, but no worries as the unopened packets of biscuits etc will be used at other library events, I feel sure...
My thanks go to Eleanor & the Library staff for putting this on.
As the Library was closed we set ourselves up in the Bus shelter as a place for people to register with us using the litter equipment held by the Tin Streamers plus anything I could carry in my wheelbarrow.
Once again as with the Community litter pick in March the support of the local community & fellow Tin Streamers was first class & greatly encouraging, We had a number of families with their children take part in the event as the accompanying photo I quickly took at the beginning as people turned up & got organised & at the end before they departed with the kids still holding their trusted litter pickers which I can tell you they used with great effect! during the two hour litter pick where we collectively as a group covered Bank Square, Market Square, North Row, Chapel street & the upper part of Boswedden Road as well as lastly the enclosed Churchyard. In total we collected 7 bags of litter as shown in the third photo which was to be collected as pre-arranged by Biffa..
I wish to once again offer a Big Thank You to everybody who came out to support the litter pick on Saturday afternoon. One has to say the enthusiasm of kids who came with their parents was brilliant to see. Who says litter picking can't be fun! Everybody can be justly proud of the contribution they have made in helping to make St Just litter free.
Hopefully in the next couple of months working with other members of the local community & fellow Town Councillors we plan to develop some ' home grown ' litter picks to help keep St Just & the surrounding area ' looking pretty '

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

Our scheduled litter pick for 10am has been postponed due to the weather. We 're moving it to 2pm when it will be less windy and dry.

Please still come along to the Library at noon for the light refreshments and to hear about the Tin Streamer's Group and options for future community litter-picks.

Thank you for your support and for your commitment to keeping our community clean.
