“I can’t say my journey has been easy, it has been challenging but so rewarding too.

“I am passionate about equity and being recognised for promoting these services and encouraging inclusion is something I don’t take for granted. I will continue to use my platform to promote equitable healthcare wherever I find myself in future.”

Congratulations to our nursing associate apprentice Ike on winning another award 🏆

Ike received a national excellence award from the Chief Nursing Officer, for his determination, integrity and passion for equitable healthcare.

While studying at The University of Salford and working with our mental health services, Ike has used his experiences to challenge stigma, promote inclusion and inspire others to believe they belong.

Originally from Nigeria, Ike overcame significant visa and cultural barriers to study nursing, after originally completing a degree in public health.

His ability to prioritise diverse patient needs and adapt his communication style ensures all patients feel understood, respected and safe.

He's a valued and trusted team member who has worked to improve the apprentice experience.

Our Parent Infant Mental Health Services, Pennine Care NHS have been sharing lots of helpful advice for infant mental health week.

This year the theme is attunement, here are some of their top tips:

A – Attention.
Spend a few minutes simply watching your child - notice their facial expressions, body movements, sounds, and changes in mood.

T – Tuning in.
Wonder what your child might be feeling, rather than just reacting to what they’re doing. Instead of asking “Why are they doing this?”, we might ask: “What might they be trying to tell me?”

A toddler throwing toys might be feeling overwhelmed. Difficulty with bedtime might be about separation worries. Clinginess may be a need for reassurance.

T - Time
Children experience the world more slowly - and often more intensely - than adults. Taking a moment to pause helps us meet them where they are.

Try waiting a moment before responding, sitting alongside rather than rushing to fix things, allowing feelings time to settle.

U – Understanding
Help your child make sense of feelings and experiences, especially those that feel confusing or overwhelming.

Understanding doesn’t make feelings disappear, it helps children feel less alone with them. You might try saying:

“That was really loud, I wonder if it scared you.”
“Maybe you feel sad because you didn’t want me to go.”
“It can be hard or frustrating when things change.”

N – Needs
Responding to what’s needed in the moment, being flexible and noticing what your child needs right now. Needs aren’t demands, they are signals.

Sometimes a baby or child needs comfort, space, play, or rest. Meeting emotional needs can help them to feel secure and supported as they grow.

E - Enough
You don’t need to be available all the time, just enough of the time.

Attunement isn’t about getting it right every time. It’s about repairing when things go wrong.

Sometimes explaining exactly what a session for a young person looks like at isn't easy because our approach varies to suit each individual's needs. However this photo shows our wonderful and creative counsellor, Georgina, in action 💚

“Carers play a vital role in supporting the people we work with, and we recognise how important it is to involve them in care planning and decision-making.

“In my role, I work closely with families and carers to ensure they feel listened to, supported, and informed throughout a person’s stay and discharge from the ward.

“As a carer champion, I also arrange and facilitate carer drop-in sessions, providing a space for carers to ask questions, share their experiences, meet other carers, and access information and support in an informal and welcoming environment.

“I also signpost carers to important local services, such as Signpost for Carers, who support and regularly attend our drop-in groups, helping carers access wider support, advice, and resources within the community.

“I’m also here to help carers access information about their rights and the support available to them, including local services and resources."

Gary is a carer champion on Safford ward in Stockport.

Our carers champions are here for patients’ friends, family and those who provide unpaid support – speak to the care team or visit our website for more info.

The World Cup kicks off this evening ⚽🏆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Patients on Arden ward have been getting creative, making this banner to get ready for a festival of football.

Fun fact - three former World Cup winners were born within a few miles of our HQ in Ashton-under-Lyne, can you name them?

We’re also proud to have colleagues from 25 of the 48 countries competing 🇨🇿 🇨🇦 🇨🇩 🇧🇷 🇺🇸 🇿🇦 🇩🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇦🇺 🇦🇹 🇹🇷 🇸🇳 🇪🇸 🇳🇱 🇸🇪 🇬🇭 🇵🇹 🇫🇷 🇮🇷 🇮🇶 🇳🇿 🇪🇬 🇧🇪🇯🇵

For people living with a serious mental illness, carers play an invaluable role in their recovery and helping them to live well.

A carer can be a family member, friend, or anyone who provides unpaid support.

Carers Week is all about building carer friendly communities, highlighting this impact and sharing the support available for carers.

Agnes is a carer support worker with our Tameside and Glossop specialist (community) mental health teams.

Agnes can offer time to listen, help with access services for a carers assessment, and is a regular presence at the Shared Ground Carer monthly carers support and information group with The Anthony Seddon Fund.

Agnes said: “I’ve supported 3 carers to attend the shared ground carer group. They enjoyed the session, valued having a voice and this motivated them to attend the Reiki session to meet with other cares, doing something for themselves”

There's also a Tameside Carers Stronger Together event tomorrow, from 1-3pm at Hyde Town Hall Tameside Council

Agnes will be there along with many other professionals and organisations - please come along for a chat, to ask questions and find out what support is available.

We’re working to reduce racial inequalities in mental health care and to improve experiences for patients and carers from diverse communities.

This is part of the patient and carer race equality framework (known as ‘PCREF’), a national initiative from NHS England.

Through this, we will be working closer with communities and other organisations who deliver care, listening to patient and carer feedback, and building cultural awareness across our services.

We’re also part of a pilot launching for to strengthen support for racially marginalised carers.

The pilot will create practical guidance for mental health trusts to improve how unpaid carers from racially marginalised communities are involved and supported.

Three of our services will be taking part; Tatton unit (pictured), Oldham mental health support team, and Stockport older people’s specialist mental health team.

This will link the existing work to the Carers Trust Triangle of Care, where patients, unpaid carers (family members, friends), and healthcare staff work together to support a person’s care.

Drop us a message if you're interested in getting involved. And look out for more updates and ways to get involved on the ‘anti-racist mental health services’ page of our website.
