A Joint Statement by 35 Labour Clubs On Rosie Duffield’s Transphobia
Labour MP Rosie Duffield’s recent remarks about Edie Izzard, prospective Labour candidate for Sheffield Central, is the latest in a series of bigoted escalating comments she has made about the LGBT+ community, usually specifically targeting trans individuals or the trans community.
In her recent speech she stated she would “not (call) Eddie Izzard a woman”. She has also endorsed comments that described trans people as “heterosexuals cosplaying”, and accused bisexual people of “(appropriating) gay culture”. Duffield herself repeatedly referred to trans people as “male bodied” in a BBC interview.
Duffield’s series of escalating comments has so far come without action from the national Labour Party. Those signing onto this statement are agreed that Duffield’s continued presence in the Labour Party and as a whip-holding MP is a disgusting insult to the LGBT+ community, and that the Labour Party overall must take firm action to combat the rising problem of transphobia in the Labour Party.
The Labour Student movement stands united against transphobia.
Signed, the Labour Clubs and Societies of Aberystwyth, Aston, Bath, Birmingham, Cardiff, Durham, East Anglia, Edinburgh, Essex, Exeter, Glasgow, Hull, KLC, Keele, Kent, Lancaster, Leeds, Leicester, Lincoln, Liverpool, Loughborough, LSE, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Oxford Brookes, Plymouth, Queen Mary, Sheffield, St Andrews, Stirling, Swansea, Warwick and York.
Update: Surrey Labour Society has now also endorsed this statement, bringing the number of signatories to 36.
