Britain’s beautiful beaches deserve better than this.

It’s time to bring water companies into public ownership and run them for people and planet, not private profit.

This summer, the streets of Barrow have been sweltering under extreme heat, while wildfires rage across many parts of the UK and Europe.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) have warned, we could face shortages of certain foods,as a result of the harsh conditions many farmers have had to face: winter floods,record-breaking heatwaves, drought in many parts of the UK,whilst not being able to irrigate due to water restrictions.

This July is confirmed to be the driest on record yet, for England and Wales, since records began 190 years ago, by the Met Office.

Climate change isn’t a distant threat for future generations,it’s happening right now, and its effects are being felt by everyone, especially the most vulnerable, putting many peoples health at risk or even their lives.

Human caused climate change is making summer heatwaves more frequent and severe, amplifying risks to human health, agriculture, transport infrastructure, and biodiversity.

Climate change is accelerating. And it’s already reshaping our daily lives. The question isn’t whether we’ll feel the impact, it’s how much worse it will become and what we can do to address it.

đź’š Huge thank you to Ged and everyone at Warrior Down LERO for showing us around the hub and the Social Supermarket, it was a great afternoon and met some fantastic and inspiring people đź’š

Warrior Down LERO is a community interest company based on Barrow island, dedicated to supporting individuals on their recovery journey from addiction, and the challenges it brings.

Since its establishment in 2019, and being reconstituted with new objectives in 2024, it has grown steadily, providing 20 beds across 7 supported buildings, near the local hub, building on over a decade of experience in delivering housing services across the area. Their work goes further than just housing, aiming to create a stronger sense of community and support recovery through initiatives like their Social Supermarket and Food Club.

The Food Club is a welcoming space where individuals can join for just ÂŁ3 per week (or whatever they can afford). Members are encouraged to take as much food as they need, ensuring no one goes hungry. The Food Club provides a variety of food items, such as:

Fresh fruit and vegetables
Bread
Prepared meals
Other essential food items.

Any leftover food from the Food Club at the Longstaffe Hub is then donated to the Community Supermarket, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

The Community Social Supermarket
is located at:

▪️13A Steamer Street, Barrow Island.
▪️Open Monday to Saturday,
▪️10:00 AM–3:00 PM.

It serves as a social hub where volunteers, who are part of the recovery program, welcome community members to shop for dramatically reduced household goods and food items.

The supermarket is run by volunteers, creating a supportive and inclusive environment where people can meet, socialise, and build connections while accessing affordable essentials. This initiative not only addresses food insecurity but also promotes sustainability, dignity, and community spirit.
