It's almost never about the money. It's about control.

The customer who spends 20 minutes trying to knock £50 off your quote may be signalling how the rest of the job will go. They might question every decision, hover while you work, ask for extras and dispute the final invoice.
Your rate is your rate because it reflects your experience, your costs and your time. It's not a starting position in a negotiation.

How to handle it:
— Don't justify your price in detail (it invites more negotiation)
— "That's my rate for this type of job" is a complete sentence
— Offer to reduce scope, not price, if budget is genuinely tight
— Walk away without guilt — the right job is out there

No deposit means you're funding someone else's job. Materials, fuel, time — all out of your pocket before you've seen a penny.

A deposit does three things:
Covers your material costs upfront
Confirms the customer is serious
Means you're never working day one for free

The pushback you get on a deposit can be telling. A customer who trusts you and wants the job done should be OK with 25–50% upfront. A customer who refuses has either had a bad experience with a tradesperson (understandable — explain your terms clearly) or has no intention of making it easy.

Make it standard. Put it in your quote. Don't apologise for it.

A lot of trades dread hitting the VAT threshold. They think it’ll price them out. In most cases, the opposite is true.
Here’s the reality:
— Serious customers expect VAT-registered tradespeople
— It signals you’re running a proper business at scale
— Commercial customers and landlords can claim it back — they actively prefer it
VAT registration isn’t a ceiling. For most trades, it’s a signal that you’ve arrived.

🧹 Trade Spotlight: From Corporate city job to Cleaning Empire – Harvey’s Cleaning

What does it take to turn a local trade into a thriving brand? For Lou, the founder of Harvey’s Cleaning, the answer lies in family values, specialised expertise, and clear team standards.

Lou's personal journey in the professional cleaning industry is a testament to how hard work, consistency, and an elite commitment to service quality can quickly transform a solo venture into a household name.

Here is a snapshot of the core philosophies driving his company's massive success:

An Elite Commitment to Service: For Lou, "clean" is more than a metric—it’s an art form. By prioritising high-end property detailing, external pressure washing, and top-tier internal care, his company maximises the true market value of every home they touch.

The Power of an Unshakeable Work Ethic: Finding the right people to build a business with is the ultimate hurdle. Lou Harvey overcomes this by centering his business strategy around team culture. When expanding his workforce, he selectively hires individuals who match his personal punctuality, reliability, and polite communication.

The message is simple: a trade business thrives on word of mouth recommendations, and that always starts on the front line.

In Lou's own words: "It's a family thing." True craftsmanship and structural business growth don’t happen overnight. By treating every customer like family and demanding mechanical perfection on site, Lou proves that success is always built from the ground up.

Not because you’re greedy. Because everything else does.
Since 2020, material costs are up significantly across most trades. Van running costs have increased. Insurance premiums have risen. The cost of living has gone up for you just like everyone else.
And here’s the thing — your skills have grown too. You’re faster, better and more reliable than you were five years ago. That’s worth more, not the same.
If you haven’t raised your rate recently, ask yourself why. Fear of losing customers? The customers worth keeping will stay.

Review your rate every January. Consider raising it every year. Tell customers in advance. Do it with confidence.

“Never give a quote on the phone”
A customer calls, describes the job, you give a number. Job booked. Sounds efficient… until you get there and it’s nothing like they described.
Phone quotes cost you money. Every time.
What a site visit actually does:
— You see the real scope, not the customer’s version of it
— You spot the complications before they become your problem
— You set expectations face to face (much easier than by text)
