Everyone at Enfield Council was sad to hear of the passing of 105-year-old war veteran, and Enfield resident, Donald Howkins.

Donald attended many Remembrance Sunday events in Enfield over the years.

Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.

Remembering Don Howkins

Everyone at the Enfield Branch of the Royal British Legion was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Enfield resident and D-Day veteran Don Howkins, aged 105.

Don was a remarkable man who represented a generation that served and sacrificed for our country during some of the most difficult days in our history. We were honoured that Don was a special guest at our recent Armed Forces Day event, where it was a privilege to spend time with him and recognise his service.

With only a handful of D-Day veterans now remaining, Don’s passing is a poignant reminder of how important it is that we continue to remember those who served their country, and ensure their courage, sacrifice and stories are never forgotten.

Our deepest condolences go to Don’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with everyone who knew him at this very sad time.

We will remember them

Please beware of potential scams relating to the application and installation process for the Warm Homes Local Grant. We have become aware of individuals operating in London who are approaching residents and asking for a fee of £300 to £1500, and saying they can ensure the success of the resident’s application or they can organise to have solar panels installed at the resident’s home. The Grant is free to eligible applicants and you should not be asked for an application fee or for any other costs at any stage.

We urge anyone who suspects any fraudulent or scamming behaviour to report it to our trading standards service directly. You should never be asked a handling fee or a charge for Local Grant energy efficiency installations. Please also notify the Warm Homes Local Grant team at [email protected] so they can keep an up-to-date evidence log and they can work with borough trading standards teams as appropriate.
