His Excellency the Governor recently visited the City Under Siege Exhibition on the Upper Rock.

During his visit, His Excellency was given a tour of the newly revamped experience, which is now much longer and details the stories of Gibraltar during the Great Siege. The exhibition includes new historical artifacts, a garden area, and careful conservation of original features, such as centuries-old soldier graffiti.

The buildings located at the site are believed to have been built in 1704 during the British capture of Gibraltar. The exhibition draws on diaries, artifacts, and preserved structures to tell the story of Gibraltar during the Great Siege of 1779-1783.

His Excellency would like to congratulate Wright Tech and heritage specialists for their superb role in restoring and preserving one of Gibraltar’s oldest surviving British military sites. Their efforts have played an important role in the strengthening of Gibraltar’s heritage and cultural identity.

In the wake of both World Environment Day and World Ocean Day, His Excellency the Governor had the pleasure of attending the Nautilus World Ocean Day award ceremony at the Sunborn Hotel. His Excellency handed out prizes for some of the best hand-crafted sustainable Christmas tree decorations, which will be used later this year for Nautilus’ tree.

The Nautilus Project is a Gibraltar-based charity that delivers initiatives aimed at raising awareness around marine environmental issues. They focus on protecting and preserving the local marine environment, and are run entirely by volunteers, relying on donations and grants to support the vital work they do.

Gibraltar, being a peninsula, finds itself in the unique position of hosting a particularly biodiverse ecosystem, one shaped by its own geography. It remains an area of ecological importance and worthy of continued protection.

At the Convent, the historic gardens stand as a reminder of Gibraltar’s rich natural heritage whilst also further supporting local biodiversity. In Gibraltar, environmental stewardship is essential to building a resilient and sustainable future.

By valuing and protecting our natural spaces, we help ensure that Gibraltar’s unique environment can continue to be enjoyed by all.

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces landed in Normandy in 1944 – a pivotal moment in the Second World War that marked the launching of Operation Overlord, which helped secure the liberation of Europe.

In the early hours of D-Day, a force of more than 130,000 troops had landed upon Normandy, beginning a campaign that would help bring an end to the Second World War.

This year, 98 names are being added to the British Normandy Memorial, ensuring those previously unrecorded are now recognised. You can find out more information here: https://www.britishnormandymemorial.org/

Today, we remember the courage, sacrifice and determination of all those who took part, including those from Gibraltar who served with distinction in the campaign.

We will remember them.

The Government of Gibraltar’s Women’s Mentorship Programme is run by the Ministry of Equality and Employment under the Hon Christian Santos GMD MP. Now in its 7th cycle, with over 200 participants, it aims to support women’s professional progress through one-to-one mentorship opportunities and group learning sessions. Mentees develop skills to help them aspire to leadership and management roles, areas where women are often under-represented.

This year, His Excellency the Governor volunteered as a mentor and was paired with Mrs Heidi Jefferies, a Ministry of Defence Civil Servant aspiring to promotion to Executive Officer, who is also the Chair of Breast Cancer Gibraltar. Both His Excellency and Heidi found the 4 one-to-one sessions of mentorship mutually rewarding, and Heidi also participated in group learning sessions, including workshops, guest speakers and networking events.

Today, His Excellency presented cheques to two local charities following the continued success of the Convent Garden Open Day. £1,500 has been donated to both the Citizens Advice Bureau and Society of St Vincent de Paul from the money raised at the Open Day, supporting the vital work they carry out in our community.

The Citizens Advice Bureau offers free, confidential support to help individuals manage everyday issues. Their services include providing food vouchers and essential provisions, alongside professional guidance such as employment advice and budgeting support.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul delivers practical assistance to individuals and families in need. They provide help through the provision of items such as household goods and food vouchers, and through work, by empowering people returning to employment or seeking guidance for personal challenges.

His Excellency gives his thanks to all those who came to the Open Day and supported these two great causes.
