Westminster Hall touched by summer sun ☀️

There are 13 stone statues in Westminster Hall, representations of each king from Edward the Confessor to Richard II. In the 1390s, the statues were placed into individual niches, where they have remained ever since.

Lachlan Goudie’s painting ‘The Vigil’ depicts the public paying their respects to Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Hall.

Along with five other artists, Goudie was invited to create a work of art during the Lying-in-State of the late Queen.

The exhibition runs until 2 October, book a free ticket via our website.

Eleanor Crook's memorial angel sculpture ‘May Flights of Angels Sing thee to thy Rest’ was installed in the Palace of Westminster in the spring.

Crook observed the Lying-in-State of Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Hall. The sculpture is cast in bronze and takes inspiration from the queue, the hall’s hammer beam roof and ceremonial items related to Lying-in-State.

The exhibition runs until 2 October 2026. You can see preparatory artworks by Crook in Westminster Hall by booking a free ticket. The final sculpture is in Norman Porch, in the House of Lords. You can see it by booking a tour of Parliament.

Julia Midgley’s collection of sketchbook drawings and watercolour paintings, and her final etching titled 'The Queue, 2022’ are a record of the artist’s time observing the Lying-in-State of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Midgley and five other artists were invited to record this historic moment for the parliamentary art collection.

Tina Crawford’s free machine embroidery work ‘A Million Footsteps’ is a representation of the public paying their respects to Queen Elizabeth II.

Her work uses the purple velvet taken from the catafalque, the structure on which the coffin sat.

Crawford was one of six artists invited to observe and record the Lying-in-State of the late Queen.

Caroline Walker’s work ‘Ceremonies of Mourning’ captures the women who contributed to the Lying-in-State of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
