Kayaking the Continent

Kayaking the Continent In April 2018, Anna and Kate are kayaking from London to the Black Sea, a 4000km world first expedition raising money for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

In April 2018, Anna Blackwell and Kate Culverwell will set out to tandem kayak from England to the Black Sea. The expedition will raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Action in memory of Kate's father, David Culverwell, who passed away from this illness two years ago. To donate, please go to virginmoneygiving.com/kayakingthecontinent

Starting in London, we will kayak across the English Channel and t

hrough a subsequent thirteen countries and four capital cities before finally reaching the shores of the Black Sea in Romania. This is a route never attempted before by kayak and will take approximately four months. Throughout the trip, we will be testing water samples to send back data to FreshWater Watch, Earthwatch’s global citizen science project investigating the health of the world’s freshwater ecosystems on a scale never seen before. They will set this data into a wider geographical context including environment and government data which will lead to solutions on how to deal with the varying types of water pollution across Europe.

It's finally here... Our last expedition update! Safe to say, things didn't go very smoothly, but we did eventually make it to the Black Sea - and even made some more friends. Turns out Serbian fishermen make a great breakfast!

Though our physical journey is over, this won't be the last blog you'll get from us. We've got a few more up our sleeves that will be with you in the coming weeks.

Thank you to all the amazing people who have sent us messages over the last 24 hours since we finished our expediton - it's been so lovely reading them and receiving such support and kind words.

Here's a short video from us... We're still processing that it's over, and are feeling quite sad that it's finished. We're already discussing ideas for our next adventure together; five months together in a tandem kayak clearly hasn't put us off each other!

This view from a few days ago was the highlight of our week... And there hasn't been much competition!

This has probably been our worst week yet. After almost a week in Belgrade while Anna was ill, we were so hoping to get back on the river and crack on with our great progress. Unfortunately, the wind had something else in store for us and almost every day we've faced headwinds of over 20kph. With the Danube so wide on the whole, it's comparable to being out on a stormy sea and we've had to cut short almost every day by a significant amount.

This incredibly slow progress has been infuriating as we are so close to finishing, but we're just about managing to keep our spirits up. We WILL make it to the Black Sea, one way or another!
