The Station recently welcomed its latest Junior Ranks Leadership Course, bringing together personnel from across a range of professions for three days of learning, collaboration and personal growth. Combining practical exercises with thought-provoking discussions, the course explored leadership styles, decision-making and the vital role of the Junior Non-Commissioned Officer in today’s Royal Air Force.

More than just a professional development opportunity, the course challenged participants to step beyond their comfort zones, build confidence and strengthen the skills required to lead others effectively. By sharing experiences and perspectives from across the Station, attendees left better equipped to inspire, support and develop the teams around them, helping to shape the next generation of leaders.

On 29 August 26, the Polish Air Force Memorial provided a fitting setting for the 65th Commemoration of Fallen Polish Airmen, a poignant occasion honouring the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom.

The ceremony brought together distinguished guests including Brigadier General Tomasz Jatczak, Inspector of the Polish Air Force and a delegation of cadets from the Polish Air Force University Dęblin, Poland. They were joined by Air Marshal Mark Flewin, Air and Space Commander and RAF Northolt’s Station Commander, Group Captain Lee Wales plus National, civic and official representatives who laid wreaths in remembrance to those whose wartime contributions remain woven into the fabric of RAF history. The weather did not deter veteran Marian Słomka who, on the eve of his 101st birthday, paid his own remembrance on behalf of the Polish Apprentices, RAF Halton. This year’s event was further enhanced by the participation of 1846 (Southall) Air Cadets Squadron, who proudly provided the Colour Party, 14F Northolt Sqn Cadets on ushering duties and RAF Music

Air Marshal Flewin said: “It was a real honour to represent the RAF at this year’s Commemoration, where it is important to take time to remember the significance of the Polish commitment to our Service, across 26 Stations during the Second World War. We remain stronger together and I am keen to ensure that we continue to deepen the linkages between our Air Forces as the threats we face continue to evolve.”

Group Captain Wales added: “It remains a privilege to Command RAF Northolt which proudly preserves its rich heritage and enduring bonds with both the local Polish community and Polish Air Force. The Commemoration served as a powerful reminder that the values and friendships forged through shared history continue to strengthen our relationship for the future.”

When RAF Brize Norton’s runway resurfacing programme under Op MACE VECTOR called for operational agility, RAF Northolt’s Air Movements Squadron (AMS) stepped up, deploying across the UK to keep vital Royal Air Force and Defence air taskings moving.

In the first of our Op MACE VECTOR features, we shine a spotlight on the teamwork behind the scenes at Stansted Airport. RAF Northolt’s Air Movements Squadron, together with its Civil Airhead Duties (CAD) Flight, have partnered with Harrods Aviation to handle complex operational moves at short notice, including C-17 aircraft. Handling specialist freight with precision and pace, it showcases the power of strong relationships between military and civilian aviation partners.

Flt Lt Yaz, Officer Commanding CAD Flight, said: “Operating through Stansted and Harrods Aviation has been a major success for Op MACE VECTOR. It demonstrates the strength of UK resilience, highlighting how military and civilian aviation partners can work seamlessly together to deliver operational effect through interoperability and collaboration.”

Victory over Japan (VJ) Day commemorates the military campaigns fought across the Asia-Pacific region during the Second World War. It honours Allied and Commonwealth personnel who engaged in long-term warfare in extremely harsh conditions and is often referred to collectively as the Far East Campaign.

We remember their ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
