National Liberal Club

National Liberal Club The National Liberal Club (NLC) is one of the UK's finest private members' clubs. Find us in the heart of Whitehall. Wells. Membership is open to all.

Founded in 1882 by Prime Minister William Gladstone, the NLC is the international home of Liberalism and a beacon of Liberal values. Welcome to the official page for the National Liberal Club - a traditional private members club co-founded by W.E. Gladstone in 1882, to provide "a home for democracy, void of the class distinction" associated with the other London clubs of the day. The club

remains completely independent, but as the name implies, continues to be closely identified with the historic Liberal tradition and with Liberals worldwide. Overlooking the Thames, the club is in the heart of Whitehall, and is blessed with "the most splendid terrace in all of London." The NLC's roll-call of members has contained seven Prime Ministers (including Winston Churchill and Ramsay MacDonald, as well as every Liberal Prime Minister since Gladstone), while in the literary sphere, members have included G.K. Chesterton, George Bernard Shaw, Bram Stoker, Dylan Thomas, Edgar Wallace and H.G. Indeed, the NLC was the first major London gentlemen's club to admit women on an equal basis; and from its inception, it was the first to admit members without implicit or explicit racial and religious barriers, with early members including Britain's first non-white MP Dadabhai Naoroji, who joined in 1885. Members are either "Political Members" (who sign a declaration that they are Liberal in their politics) or "Ordinary Members" (who pledge that they will not use the club for any cause harmful to liberalism). More information on the club is available through our website at http://www.nlc.org.uk/ including details of the club's facilities, membership rates, and its network of over 300 reciprocal clubs worldwide. A separate members-only group exists at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nlcmembers. As members of that facebook group must be members of the NLC, group applicants will have their names checked against a current list of NLC members.

Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime tables

Have you ever attended one of our regular Tuesday or Thursday Tables socials? These long-standing Club socials are now also held every Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime, giving you the chance to meet new members and socialise at your NLC during the day.

Come along at 12:30pm and meet us in the Bar for a drink before moving through to the Dining Room for lunch from around 1:00–1:30pm. Hosted by one of our long-standing members, these lunches are especially suited to those who are unable or prefer to visit the Club during the daytime and are designed to be a relaxing and enjoyable way to meet fellow members, make new friends and find out more about life at your Club. See you in the Bar!

Did you know our Club was built at a moment when this part of London was being transformed? Just a few years before construction began, the Victoria Embankment had been created along the Thames between 1864 and 1870 under the direction of the great Victorian engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette. The project reclaimed around 15 hectares of land from the river, creating a new road, gardens and riverside promenade, while concealing a major interceptor sewer and part of the new underground railway beneath it.

The Embankment is a remarkable feat of Victorian engineering, and our Club was designed in much the same spirit. Designed by the renowned architect Alfred Waterhouse in a distinctive Gothic Revival style, the Club was, at the time, the largest purpose-built club in London, reflecting both the ambition of the Liberal movement and the extraordinary programme of engineering and urban transformation that had reshaped the Thames frontage.

Take a look at the trees! They're a lot larger today than when they were planted over 150 years ago. Perhaps a better view before, but a lot more shade for these summer months today!

Membership Open Evening at the NLC!

Join us to get the opportunity to experience Club life at our Membership Open Evening on Monday 7 September.

Our great founder, Prime Minister William Gladstone, intended the Club to be a place for freethinkers, where people from all backgrounds and walks of life could come together to socialise, freely exchange ideas in the Liberal spirit and contribute to national life. We are proud to continue this tradition as one of the most welcoming and inclusive clubs in London, and invite like-minded people to join us to experience life at the NLC and consider membership with us.

Attendees will enjoy a tour of the Club, hear our grand Steinway piano in action and sit down to a three-course meal prepared by our expert chef team. Our membership team will also be on hand throughout the evening to tell attendees more about membership and answer any questions they may have.

We also encourage attendees to bring family, friends or colleagues to experience our incredible Club together. Book your tickets through the link in the bio today!

Have you seen the beautiful stained-glass window above the Front Desk? The four panels depict some of the Liberal Party's most influential figures: Sir William Harcourt, Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer; Lord Rosebery, Prime Minister from 1894 to 1895; William Ewart Gladstone, four-time Prime Minister and founder of the National Liberal Club in 1882; and John Morley, politician, writer and one of Gladstone's closest allies. Together, they represent some of the key figures who shaped Liberal politics during the Victorian era. Take a closer look next time you're at the Club and discover more of our rich Liberal heritage throughout the building.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent 50 Years of Women event at the Club. The evening celebrated the milestone of 50 years since the National Liberal Club became the first major private members' club to admit women as full members. We are proud to continue that legacy as one of the UK's most inclusive and welcoming private members' clubs.

A special thank you to all of our contributors who made the event such a success, including our amazing keynote speaker, Lady Hale of Richmond DBE, Janet Berridge, the National Liberal Club's first woman Chair, and Karin Rehacek, the Club's most recent Chair.

Here's to the next 50 years 🥂! If you'd like to find out more about becoming a member, visit the link in our bio and get in touch with our team today.
