MPs on the Treasury Committee have published the government's response to our report on student loans.

The Department for Education and the Student Loans Company have committed to change the information provided to prospective students so that they can make better informed decisions before taking out student loans.

The government also said in its response:
- It will redesign guidance to be clearer that the terms can be changed by future governments
- It will share more information to help people understand how different career choices can affect their repayments
- It has not rejected our recommendation to reverse the November 2025 increase to the Plan 2 repayment threshold outright, but says that all aspects of the student finance system are under review
- It rejected our recommendations to abandon the use of Retail Price Index to calculate student loan interest rates, and to treat student loan holders in line with the rules of the FCA's Consumer Duty

MPs warn that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the UK Statistics Authority (UKSA) must learn from past failures to rebuild trust in the data they provide.

A new report from the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs committee highlights the toxic culture at senior levels of the ONS that contributed to unreliable data, and notes that action should have been taken sooner by the UKSA Board and the Cabinet Office. Moving forward, we welcome the considerable efforts being made to reform the ONS’ culture and restore its reputation.

This week, Ashton Collins, Director of Save Face, gave further evidence to the Women and Equalities Committee. Our new follow-up report warns that delays to Government action on high-risk cosmetic procedures are "prolonging a significant risk to patient safety".

This follows our February report on cosmetic procedures which recommended ‘high-harm’ procedures such as the liquid Brazilian butt lift (BBL) should be banned from the high street immediately without further consultation.

The Government’s response to this was due in April and is yet to be received.

UK households owed £7.2bn to energy and water companies as of March 2025, and with bills set to rise further, this debt is only set to grow.

Despite the scale of the problem, a new Public Accounts Committee report finds that regulators don't have a comprehensive view of a person's debt across energy, water and broadband, meaning the early warning signs of financial struggle often go unnoticed.

We lack confidence that Ofwat, Ofgem and Ofcom are fulfilling their role in supporting consumers in financial difficulty.

Our report recommends:

- Regulators working with government to help companies proactively identify customers who need support
- Making discounted tariffs the default for the most financially vulnerable
- A single central register allowing customer needs and data to be shared across sectors

The government is moving forward with crucial online protections recommended by the Education Committee.

Earlier this year, we published a report calling for online harms to be treated as a safeguarding and public health issue, and for technology companies to be responsible for making their products safe for their users, including children.

The government agrees with us and says it is taking action necessary to keep children safe online.
