REMEMBERING THE FEW

Today a group of cadets and volunteers gathered at the RAF Shelter in Brookwood Military Cemetery to commemorate the Battle of Britain.

The Battle of Britain is remembered on the closest Sunday to 15 September (Battle of Britain Day). On the 15 September 1940 the Luftwaffe launched a massive assault in the skies over Britain, but after heavy fighting the RAF inflicted a decisive defeat.

Our cadets remembered some of the 544 RAF aircrew and 312 RAF personnel killed on the ground during the battle by planting crosses at some of their graves.

Lest we forget.

NEW OFFICER 🫡

Congratulations to Acting Pilot Officer Holdstock who recently passed a commissioning board interview at Region to confirm his appointment.

At 19, he is one of the first senior cadets to take the opportunity to commission before the age of 20 within Surrey Wing since the rule change.

Well done

⭐RECOGNISING OUR VOLUNTEERS ⭐

We also recognised two of our amazing adult volunteers on parade at yesterday's Wing Field Day.

Warrant Officer Alan Shaw was presented with a Certificate of Long Service from Officer Commanding Surrey Wing in recognition of over 45 years voluntary service. WO Shaw joined 43F (Merton & Morden) Sqn (as it was then) in 1981, before moving to 1034 (Surbiton) Sqn three year later, where he has served ever since. Thank you for your dedicated service.

Squadron Leader Linda Willson was presented with a Officer Commanding Surrey Wing's Certificate of Meritorious Service for her service to the Wing. Sqn Ldr Willson is the Wing Training Officer, running large courses such as the Cadet NCO weekends. She has also supported many camps, STEM and Leadership activities.

Thank you both for your dedicated service to the Wing.

A great week of adventure training in North Wales for the Wing to wrap up summer camp season.

45 Cadets and 15 Adult Volunteers have just returned from a week at Capel Curig. They got to push themselves to the limit while having great fun. Climbing mountains, exploring old mines, canoeing, paddle boarding and mountain biking - they did it all.

If that sounds like something you want to try, visit www.raf.mod.uk/aircadets to find your local squadron to join us.

As we near the end of the summer we can start to look back on our Summer Camps. This year Surrey Wing joined with several Combined Cadet Force (RAF) units for an excellent week at RAF Waddington.

During the week there was a chance meeting with a former cadet of 328 (Kingston upon Thames) Squadron. Air Commodore Ferris started her life in RAF uniform at 328 Sqn, just like the two cadets pictured alongside her, before starting her career in the RAF. Earlier this year she was appointed as ISTAR Force Commander, a great achievement, showing how far our cadets can go.
